P: 'Blend If' Stops Working When There is a Clipped Layer on the Group

Hello everyone,

Today, I ran into an issue with Photoshop's "Blend If" function that I haven't encountered before. I searched online but couldn’t find any clear explanation, so I’m hoping someone here might know what's happening.

System 

I am using the latest version of Photoshop on Windows 10 Pro, version 22H2.

The Issue

When I apply the "Blend If" (underlying layer) option to a layer within a group, it works fine—until I clip any layer to that group. As soon as there's a clipped layer attached, "Blend If" stops working on that layer, regardless of whether the clipped layer is visible or hidden.

Example Setup

1. Imagine two groups: Group 1 and Group 2.
2. There's one layer in each group.
3. I use the "Blend If" setting on the layer in Group 1, and it works perfectly.
4. However, as soon as I clip a layer to Group 1, the "Blend If" effect is disabled.

Hi, yesterday before I save my work and close it, it was working just fine !
when I opened it this morning to continue my work, I found out that the Blend if ( Underlying layer) is not working however the current layer works !!!
Idk what should I do !!

Blend If underlying is one of my most used Photoshop functions, and it works just fine here.

What is the result you're expecting, vs the result you're actually getting?

People often misunderstand how color channels affect colors. Targeting the blue channel doesn't necessarily mean blue colors. It could be any color depending on the blue channel's relationship to the other color channels. Low end blue channel mainly affects yellows, for instance.

The underlying layer here seems to be an all white color fill layer. So no effect with the setting you show.

Exactly, the underlying is white, so the shadow has to disappear, but it doesn't!!

On your last post marked 'Look' the layer with the blend if mode looks like it is in a group but the white colour fill layer is not. What is the blend mode of the group? It would need to be 'passthrough' for the layer with blend if to interact with the layer below which is outside of the group.

UPDATE

I took it off the groupe and it works now, but I still don't understand why it wasn't working when it was inside the groupe EVEN the blendmode of the groupe is ( PASSTRHOUGH)

It works correctly here with the group in passthrough.
Can you go to Photoshop's Help >System info and press Copy. Then paste the info here

Thanks for the system info.

The current version of Photoshop is 25.4 so you may want to update.

Also, right click in your dekstop - choose other options then NVidia control panel.  Under Manage 3D settings, program settings make sure that the NVidis GPU is the preferred GPU for both Photoshop and Sniffer.exe. That should ensure your Intel processor does not get used in compositing.
