P: Crashes when using the filter Lighting Effects

Enthusiast ,
Oct 19, 2018 Oct 19, 2018

I'm just not happy with this version of PS - it's buggy and frustrating.

  • When using Filter, Render, Lighting Effects PS crashes every single time.
  • I've also reported on this forum the problems with the Adjustment Layers and using Blend  modes. They are not working as they should.
  • The Constrain Link doesn't work. It's a bug. . . and yes I know that you don't hold Shift to maintain aspect ratio now but when you un-check the Maintain Aspect Ratio constrain link on the toolbar and then use transform it still maintains aspect ratio. . .  un-checking the link should disable aspect ratio shouldn't it? The shift key + transform disables aspect ratio but doesn't correspond with the constrain link on the tool bar.

All is working how it should.

I used the Lighting Effects on both a normal layer and a smart object and no crashing whatsoever after updating to 20.0.2 . I'm quite pleased at how quickly the filter rendered also.

Thanks Jeffrey

I must mention that I tried the Lighting Effects on 50% grey layer as well.

All exports as should and can re open psd and all Lighting Effects are as normal. I noticed on another forum that there were issues with the Lighting Effects filter when saving.  Hope this helps.

Hannah Nicollet  Hi Hannah, sorry for the ping back, but you've been so helpful and understanding in the past with PS new releases and bugs and I guess I'm reaching out hoping that you could pass the above bugs that I'm experiencing with PS cc v20 to the PS Engineers .

I'm grateful I didn't uninstall PS cc v19.1.6 because I was then able to compare behaviours in each app. I'm reading lots of different issues with the newest PS version and I totally understand how busy you must be.

I think from this point on that I'm going to continue using PS cc v19.1.6 until the new PS is updated with fixes - at least I can stop tearing my hair out. haha.

Warm regards
Rosa

Hi, if you go to Preferences > Performance, checking Legacy Compositing then restart photoshop maybe that will solve the issue.

I've done that Eugenio. . . it's works for the Blend mode issue but not for the crashes in Filter-Render-Lighting Effects.

I've wasted valuable time going from one PS v to another. I'm going to stick with v 19.1.6.

Thanks anyway.

Rosa, did you submit a crash log with your email address? If not, please do. That will help me find it in the system and start tracking it down.

Never uninstall the older Photoshop.

This is one of the bigger updates I've seen in awhile.

I just followed a video about this filter (photoshop CC 2018) + dynamic object. https://youtu.be/8Gfx8JPpJrA
and if the filter applied on a dynamic object, closes correctly, while...

If I use this filter in Photoshop CC 2018 (frenf version on macOS 10.14, when I close the filter interface, it automatically creates a 3D layer above the layer of the dynamic object used to launch the filter!

I specify, I reset the pref. from Photoshop

So there must be a problem in Photoshop

There are also sometimes craxh when you want to close the filter by OK ????

No it's still the same behavior!

Just to add my input, I am experiencing all the same issues noted by Rosa in her post which started this thread. I am running Ps on a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit OS. Based on all the reports posted in this forum, PS version 20.0 is a very buggy release no matter the OS used.

Many business professionals depend on Adobe products for their livelihood. Adobe needs to step up their product evaluation process to avoid wasting their customer's valuable time. I vote for products stability over more features when a new version is released to the public.

For me, the Lighting Effects filter caused a Photoshop crash that not only failed to recover the file but when I went back and reopened it, several layers had disappeared - even though I had saved the file with those layers right before the crash - and the layers that had lighting effects applied were all black. I lost a couple hours of work.

Subsequent tries with Lighting Effects caused strange behaviors, such as layers with the Lighting Effects applied turning black at different zooms. Any attempt to save-as a flattened or exported file resulted in an all-black canvas when opening that file. Sometimes simply moving an image on a layer after applying Lighting caused parts of the image on that layer to turn black.

I worked around the issue by taking a screenshot at the largest zoom that didn't turn black to get a usable image to bring into my InDesign layout. Also, I noticed when applying Lighting Effects, a perspective grid would briefly appear, then a breakdown of the actions would appear in the layers palette until the effect finished.

I am also frustrated by the constrain proportions being reversed. When I don't want to do a constrained scale in the current aspect ratio, I have to hold the shift key to unconstrain the scale.

I agree 100%. And I would rather get less-frequent releases of new versions in favor of more stable releases as well. I have been using Photoshop from its beginning. I used to upgrade to new versions with anticipation, now, especially since Adobe went to the subscription model, I upgrade with trepidation.

Exact same issue here Ruth.
And here I thought it was my GFX card!
As for constrains, this reverse hinders workflow but I guess we have to adapt to it.
They could add a setting in prefs though which would solve the problem quickly.

Well I haven't apparently but it's easy to install older versions. For those who don't know and are creative cloud members:

- launch the Creative Cloud app
- click the arrow next to Open, then select Manage and then Other Versions
- install v19.1.6 from that list

Yes, but this is NOT THE solution, I need new features brought by the latest version, so Adobe, please, quickly a fix of this version, both on Windows that makes PS look like on macOS who does not know how to complete the dynamic object!
