P: Crashes when using the timeline to move a mask.

I am having an issue with animating using the timeline. Everything works fine except when I try and move a mask. If I want a mask to move to slowly reveal the layer, say from right to left, if I try and drag the mask over and release it lined up with the edge of the document Photoshop crashes/disappears. If I move it from the right edge to the center, it is fine, but if I move it to one of the edges it crashes. It does it on all the documents I have tried it on, not just one specific document. It has happened only since the latest update, which I did at the same time I updated my Mac to the latest OS. I have be using the timeline to animate things for years, never had this issue, I have no idea how to fix it. I am working on a 17" iMac

I did find the crash logs you submitted. I've asked an engineer to look at it, but it would still help to have rock solid steps to repro.

Hi Bryan, Are you using a Frame Animation or Video Timeline?

I wasn't able to reproduce the problem using either. Might need a video showing your steps so we can repro.

Thanks for the response.

I will try and get a video of it happening, but here is some additional info for now.

First some background, sorry if this is more info than you need. Last Sunday everything was fine, then I started the update to the Mac OS before bed, woke up the next morning and it had an error saying it could finish the install, that eventually lead to me initializing the hard drive and doing a fresh install of Mojave. I then installed Photoshop & Illustrator, I believe that the version of Photoshop I installed was a newer version as I hadn't taken the most recent update to that point. The issues with the mask/crash have only been happening since I did all of this.

I will also mention that working with the Video Timeline has been slower, I get way fewer frames per sec while playing the preview than I did before.

Also I have noticed that the masks do not update in realtime anymore, if I move it it doesn't show it moving it remains the same visually until I release the mouse to stop dragging and then it changes what you see on screen. It also does this when I drag the playhead in the time line, doesn't update the mask until after I release the mouse. I have attached a video of this with an inset of what the time line is doing while it is happening.

I am also including some pics to maybe better explain what I am attempting to do when the crash occurs. I have a layer that I want to reveal over a span of 2 seconds. So I apply a mask to the layer, and then have it move to the left. So when I click to add another position on the timeline 2 seconds later, then go to the layer mask and drag it over, if I release it lined up with the edge of the document Photoshop crashes/disappears.

What the mask looks like at the first and last position:

What the image looks like before/after:

I'll try and upload the video of the actuall crash happening, but for now here is the video I mentioned earlier of the mask not updating until I release the drag.

Here is a .gif what I should be seeing:

Here is what is actually happening:

Not sure if this helps, if you need me to explain anything more I will try, I've been using Photoshop for over 20 years, but I'm more of an Art guy, not a computer expert 🙂

Thanks!

Thanks. Mind if I email to you to get a copy of your file? The other thing I'd like you to try is download Photoshop CC 2018 and try the same thing in that: https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/using/install-previous-version.html

Sure, you can email, no problem. Do you have access to my email or do you need me to give it to you?

I will download CC 2018 and try it with that.

Also, here is a video fo the crash happening, just my iPhone pointed at the screen, sorry about the quality. But you can see that when I release the drag of the mask PS crashes/disappears.

(note, the drag of the mask isn't smooth because I was holding the phone with my other hand, so that isn't on the software)
