P: CS6 Nearest neighbor no longer works properly

Photoshop CS6,
Using windows 64 bit
When image interpolation is set in the preferences to nearest neighbor and also set on the toolbar on top to nearest neighbor my image blurs when using free transforms. This happens when I reduce something more then 70% in RGB color mode. Also the Image was a 2 color neutral image (a jaquard weave).
Thanks,
Frederick

Hi Jeanne,

I know you logged the problem (and it's very appreciated) but is there any way I can email you the actual image (it may help). It's in psd format.

One problem I have is this. I write books on Photoshop for Textile Design. Should I mention it in my book or will it be fixed so soon (if it's a known bug) that I shouldn't even mention it.

FYI: The book is going out next month.

Thanks again,
Frederick Chipkin

Hi Frederick,

Unfortunately, I can't comment on if or when bugs will be fixed, so I'm afraid I can't be much help there. Go ahead and send me the PSD file at jrubbo AT adobe DOT com and I'll attach it to the bug.

Will do,
The subject line will be "From Frederick C - about blurr bug"
I know that typing emails is pretty dry (can't here the tone of my voice)
but I'm ecstatic over your concern. This affects my livelyhood.

Take care & huge thanks,
Frederick Chipkin

I hope I'm not bugging you too much Jeanne but it appears the blurring happens when the image is either pasted into a layer or a free floating layer. The blurring doesn't seem to happen when I resize the Backround layer using Freetransform.
If you received the image I sent in the email what I said will be apparent.

Thanks again,
Frederick

The exact same thing happens when I try to use the warp function (the image blurs even though both the menu bar &* prefferences are set to nearest neighbor).

To clarify. Make sure all settings are nearest neighbor (both tool bar on top of the screen and in prefferences) Create a blank canvas in RGB. create a new layer. On that newly created layer create a box with the marquee tool & fill it with a flat color.
Then try using the warp function. The image which should be perfectly flat blurs.

One more thing I noticed. this seems to happen only when the layer is not selected with the selection tool (does not have marching ants around it). It has to be on a layer (transparant layer) and must be free floating. Please let me know if I'm bein clear.

Jeanne thanks again,
Frederick

It can happen anytime you free transform something and are zoomed out at 50% or less.
We reproduced the problem and identified the cause.

Dear Jeanne,

If you're still working there, I'm afraid I can say that Photoshop CC sports this problem once again (i.e. perhaps not fixed in this edition.) Please help!

Very best wishes,

Chris W.

We haven't seen this at all in Photoshop CC.

Double check the version that you're running, and make sure you have all the updates installed.

Many thanks — Well, I'm seeing it, and I'm running the absolute latest edition, just downloaded 3 days ago.

I've never seen this problem before; it appears to only erupt with scaling and layered or selected image manipulation, not in an individual file resize with interpolation set to "nearest neighbor." In all previous versions of Photoshop I've seen, setting interpolation to nearest neighbor in preferences aliases (as opposed to anti-aliases) all image sizing/manipulation (and concomitantly will anti-alias anything where "bicubic" is selected.) Is there perhaps a new setting with which I'm not familiar?

Again, I have preferences set to "nearest neighbor."

Many thanks!

Chris W.

Most grateful regards,

Ah, it sounds like you are using Free Transform. Did you forget to change the interpolation in the tool options bar?

I'm not actually working in free transform directly, but you're right — I did NOT check the tool option bar. Thank you for pointing that out, and sorry to be such an idiot! This obviously makes having to go back and forth between the preferences settings so much less cumbersome (which is why, I'm assuming, it was added.)

Thank you again, and my very best wishes,

Chris W.

Wow. Well, double thanks, then. Never thought I'd be able to directly address someone who "wrote the tools," as it were. I am genuinely impressed and genuinely grateful, across the spectrum, for everything you and your engineers/programmers have done and continue to do.
