P: CS6 - problem with scanning after upgrading to Mountain Lion (MacOS 10.8)

Hello

After upgrading to latest version of Mountain Lion i've got a problem with scanning directly into Photoshop CS6.

on the previous Lion version when I wanted to scan something, i just opened Photoshop -> File -> Import -> images from device
then a new window opened up where I could choose the device I wanted to use, and then I selected the scanner (Canon CanoScan 8400F) and I could scan directly into photoshop.

Now with Mountain Lion when I do the exact same thing, it opens a window, but it's impossible to select any device, as the new window is just a plain white window, with 2 buttons on top to rotate something that isn't there.

hope someone can help me out, I can scan the normal way and then save that picture and open it in Photoshop, but it has worked before, so am I doing something wrong? or is this just a little bug

thnx in advance for the help

Hi again,

Working with Apple engineers, we have identified the root problem of why the dialog appears blank when running Photoshop CS6 in Mountain Lion. Unfortunately, the fix for this is outside our control, so I cannot provide any information on when this may be fixed. I am still investigating possible workarounds, but at this point I am frustrated by this the same as everyone here is. I believe this will be fixed in the near future, but cannot promise anything.

To Alba: One possible solution is to use the VueScan TWAIN adapter in conjunction with the Photoshop CS6 TWAIN plugin (you'll need to download this plugin from adobe.com). I have heard that some users have found this to be a good way to enable scanners for which there are no native 64-bit TWAIN drivers available. This isn't an ideal solution, especially for people who are not currently VueScan owners.

To Hilda: I think the Epson comment was specific to TWAIN; many Epson scanners do work with ImageKit in 64-bit mode without needing to install any additional software. In Mountain Lion, you can confirm this by running the Image Capture utility application to perform scanning. Once Photoshop's problem is resolved, it will support exactly the same scanners as Image Capture does.

Again, I apologize for this situation. The last thing I expected when I implemented this feature earlier this year was to find everything so broken so soon after we released Photoshop CS6 (and not being able to fix it ourselves). Such is the nature of software development sometimes...

Paul - thank you. Adobe should just buy Apple (stop laughing). We have a huge new Adobe facility going in about ten minutes from us. I think they'll make good neighbors. Especially if they are like you.

But now wait. Paul, I know you're a 6 guy - but can anybody tell me, then - I am running CS 5.5 - which means that I'm PS 5 (or v. 12.1 for Mac). I have no problem running TWAIN when I am at 32 bit. If I upgrade my OS from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, will I still be able to run TWAIN, using the PS version I am now?

Hi kdrandle,

If you are running CS 5.5, you should be able to continue running in 32-bit mode and use the TWAIN plugin to access your scanner without problem, or at least I've not heard of any TWAIN problems with Lion or Mountain Lion (the problems with ImageKit support have to do with Cocoa, and not scanning, so that is unrelated to TWAIN, which does not use that part of Cocoa.)

Photoshop CS6 is 64-bit only, so you cannot run in 32-bit mode at all, and this is a problem with TWAIN because there are almost no 64-bit TWAIN drivers available from any scanner manufacturers; the only ones I'm aware of are for late model Canon scanners.

And I'm not just a "6 guy", I'm a CS1 guy, a CS2 guy, a CS3 guy, a ... :-)

CS6 Photoshop is 64 bit only. No one seems to be able to find a scanner which works in 64 bit mode. Image Capture does not work on Mountain Lion (known fault). It seems Adobe are out of step here with manufacturers. Help please.

Hi Hilda,

Image Capture is a utility program in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder, and is a standard part of Mac OS X. As far as I know, Image Capture does work properly in Mountain Lion.

ImageKit refers to the underlying Cocoa frameworks (programming interfaces) used by Image Capture as well as by Photoshop and other applications to perform scanning. For reasons I won't go into here, these are not working correctly in Photoshop, but are in Image Capture, which is the problem we're working to resolve with Apple.

The scanners that work with Image Capture/ImageKit are also a standard part of Mac OS X, which means that users do not have to go to a different web site (e.g. Epson's web site) to download and install drivers for their specific scanner, which you do have to do with TWAIN. Scanner support (numbering in the hundreds) through Image Capture/ImageKit is already included in Mac OS X "out of the box".

We added support for ImageKit scanning to Photoshop CS6 because we recognized it was unlikely that scanner manufacturers would go back and rewrite their TWAIN drivers to work in 64-bit mode (especially older scanners that are no longer manufactured).

One advantage is that as improvements are made to ImageKit and as more scanners are added by Apple to their Mac OS X releases over time, Photoshop users get those "for free", so to speak. Unfortunately, changes to ImageKit made for Mountain Lion have had the effect of breaking this feature in Photoshop, but we are confident this will get sorted out.

By the way - one more thing - I think this Adobe product line is brilliant, astonishing, mouth-droppingly wonderful, even when I run into problems. When I think about the interlacing complexities that make it all work so seamlessly, I start to understand what "awe" means.

(1) I got help from Samsung CS rep named Erica, who assured me my scanner is 64 bit. Downloaded their latest Scan Driver (OSX 8.6, unfortunately) but it did enable a differentiated scanner window using their Quick Scan, Scan & Fax manager. Still, nothing in PS Import, & no res. over 600 dpi, but I could set a percentage as high as 400% & then use PS CS6 to refactor in Image Size.
(2) Our MacSpecialist tech suggested using Silverfast or Vuescan. I chose Vuescan (Scanner compatible) - spent some money, of course - installed it, & lo! there it is in Photoshop>File>Import, ready to be selected. Even better, I can choose any number of resolution options.

Thnx so much Paul, for looking into this and came up with some answers.
I guess we have to wait then for further problem solving by apple.

I recently had to buy a new printer for over network and AirPrint.
I bought the all in one Canon MG8250.
When I run PS CS6 now, I can scan in Photoshop with this AllInOne with the ScanGear solution from Canon.
Although I'm not completely satisfied with the scanned image, still figuring out I guess, I'm keeping my old scanner too and hopefully there's gonna be a solution for this in the near future

My new CS6 Photoshop does not recognize my Epson Perfection 4490 Scanner. How do I import from my scanner? It came up under "Import" in my previous Photoshop.

Scanning drivers/interfaces have always been fragile (and the longer you hold onto hardware, the more likely the old drivers and interfaces will become obsolete with OS and hardware changes). My scanner, for example, only has a 32bit driver and I run Photoshop in 64bit.

Personally, I do all my scanning with the stand-alone scanner software. All TWAIN or WIA really does is bring up the scanner's stand-alone software interface in a modal dialog in Photoshop. There’s no quality difference using the stand-alone software, plus you’re not tying up Photoshop (a $1000 piece of software) just doing scanning. You can retouch and edit images in Photoshop while you scan in the background using the free stand-alone scanning software – which is far more efficient use of your time and Photoshop.

I'm having the same problem too with my Epson Perfection 1670 scanner. When I click on the 'Image from device' box (which is also empty) it triggers my scanner to scan, but no scanned image appears anywhere!

Do I need a more modern scanner as my 1670 is pretty old?

As a professional, I have always worked with scanning directly into Photoshop. Its the quickest and most efficient way to world with photos I am restoring, nothing will convince me otherwise! I think it is sad that, what I and so many others consider a basic programme requirement is still unresolved.

Spent the last few days on the phone with Apple, Adobe etc.
Apple can't recommend any particular scanner that will work! Apple have just told me (I'm on the phone now!) that there must be a driver or patch available from Adobe-!!!
Does anyone know what's going on here?

Does anyone know of a scanner - (any scanner) that will scan using OSX 10.8.2 and Photoshop CS6? I've not been able to scan since December 2012 when I bought a brand new mac and I'm getting desperate! If I can't find one I'm going to have to go back to using my old Mac (10.4) and photoshop 7 - at least they worked!

Apple made a mistake in 10.8. Apple has identified the problem, and given us a workaround for it.

Apparently no scanner will work, because the problem is with Apple's code loading the Photoshop UI elements.

You can still scan outside of Photoshop.

Thanks Chris. My son set it up to scan through 'Image capture' using my dodgy Kodak all-in-one printer but the images were pretty bad. He then managed to set it up to scan in Image capture using my Epson scanner and the images are now passable. It's a round-the-houses way of doing it but it will have to do until the problem is fixed.

LATEST
Just for the record:

I have just downloaded the latest Vuescan Pro Edition v.9.2.09 and it works flawlessly with Photoshop CS6 — both through its Photoshop Plug-in and as a separate Stand-alone application.

I am using an Epson 4990 scanner on OSX 10.6.8 but I understand that this version of Vuescan will run on ML as well.

Vuescan Pro Edition is Colour Managed and lets me scan at high resolutions, various bit-depths and also provides the kind of settings and controls which one should expect from scanning software.
