P: CS6 Slow compared to CS5.1 with large files

PS CS6 has a lot of enhancements and great features. it launches very fast, and the control is very responsive and smooth.

although i am experiencing some speed issues with very large files. compared to CS5.1, where i don't have any of these issues.

the files are PSBs, 9000x8000px, 80+layers, RGB, 8bit

i have the same performance settings for both, cs6 and cs5
i am working on MAC PRO, 16GB ram, SSD scratch, 2TB raid, Radeon HD 5770, Snow Leopard.

the main issues i have are:

- no refresh when i move the curve on adjustment layer. the refresh comes after i let go.
- jagged pan
- extremely slow moving of layers and layer groups, even if they are with smaller dimensions (800x400pix)

again, working with files with less layers or smaller dimensions is very fast.

ok, i compared the system logs of both CS6 & CS5.1. everything seems to be equal.
the only thing which is different is that there is Open CL in cs6 but there is nothing next to it.

i turned Open CL off from the performance settings, but nothing changed.

the slow control is still there.

it is really strange, when i move a small layer group it even shows a progress bar for the movement??

in cs5.1 it's almost instant, yes it needs some time, but it's not comparable with cs6.

what else can i try?
i just bought CS6 WEB&DESIGN premium, because i love the new features, but if it works that slow i should stick to cs5.

can you do a test for me. From the Layers panel menu choose Panel Options and choose "None" for thumbnails. Does the performance improve?

so, here the results form the test:

without thumbnails the performance improves a little. it seems to me that it's slightly slower than cs5 but almost there.
even if it works better, i can't work without the thumbnails.

on the other hand this didn't improve the behavior of the curves adjustment layer.
i played around with it and that is what i discovered. the curve doesn't refresh only during the first time i move a point. and after i let the curve point i see the result. when i move the curve again it refreshes in real time.
the same happens with another curve adjustment i want to change or create. first time nothing, than everything works fine.

other interesting thing is that when i turn the thumbnails in cs5 i dont' see any improvement. it doesn't make any diference when they are turned on or off.

OK. Yeah, I know turning off thumbnails isn't desirable, but it confirms that you're seeing a known issue we're investigating. I wouldn't expect a difference in Cs5 with thumbnails off - well maybe a tiny difference - but again, it confirms something we're investigating. On the curves thing, I'll have QE see if they can repro that and try and understand what you're seeing.

Also, I would like to see a full copy and paste of your Photoshop system info so we can try to find like hardware here and look for system specific clues.

Upgraded and have been using CS6 for last couple days. In Photoshop CS6, nudging a layer group displays a progress bar and takes several seconds each time. Sometimes infuriatingly slow.

This post (https://twitter.com/#!/eskalationdk/s...) on twitter suggests if you press command-t to transform the layer group it nudges with acceptable performance, however this is not an effective workaround for me.

Ah, I can confirm that turning thumbnails off in my layers palette fixes my issues while nudging layer groups. Kind of a bummer to lose the thumbnails, but at least the software is usable again.

This is a serious issue for me, Photoshop CS 6 is unusable for large files, as soon as I switch to the zoom tool it locks up for a few minutes, I can't believe the difference in performance between CS5 and CS6, this really needs a fix asap.

The only big problem I see is that your video card driver is way out of date (2010).

FIrst we need to figure out what it is about your system that is making it slow. Most people are seeing CS6 as fast, or faster, than CS5.

So what is different about your system?

hi Chris,
i was so happy when Jeffrey said that you are investigating that issue and also when i saw that others are having the same problem.
now i am a little confused regarding your reply.

- first thing is that i am working on a mac and we get our driver updates with the system update. my system is always up to date. there is no other way to get a video card driver update. i am wondering that you didn't now this.

- second thing is that i am working as a professional with photoshop for a long time. it is very easy for me to see the slightest performance drawback, an i already told you that my settings are exactly the same as CS5.

CS6 is very fast and faster than CS5 for users working with regular sized SLR 6000x4000px photos, with probably 20+ layers. or with web design comps with no matter how many layers but very small resolution.

i work with comps sometimes exceeding 12000x10000px and with 100+ layers. whit these files CS6 is definitely slower than CS5. this is my job, not my hobby, i am working with this files every day, so i'll stick to CS5 till there is a fix for it.

I think I've just looked at too many system info reports today, sorry about that.
(I copy them into a text editor to make them easier to read, and I probably had a dozen open)

On very large documents, CS6 is working faster than CS5 for most people.

The only place we've seen a slowdown is on large documents when moving several layers at once (due to a problem with the layers palette thumbnail drawing).

i can imagine that my system is a bit old, although i am trying to upgrade as much as possible. if a new mac pro arrives some day the things gonna change i hope.

yes when i move a layer group with few layers inside it is very slow. i can imagine that the curves adjustment redraw issue i'm having is also connected with this.

Curves should not be related, but you should still try turning off layer thumbnails and see if that solves all the slowness you're seeing.

I agree with Laden. Even after turning Layer Thumbnails off, I'm still seeing a noticeably slower performance - and I upgraded from CS4. Opening larger files, moving layer groups and saving the files is all slower and I think it's an issue that goes beyond video card drivers.

I have a standard issue Mac Pro, to be 100% crystal clear, I still have Photoshop CS5 installed and it's still working OK, I only have this problem in Photoshop CS6.

I did have the CS6 beta installed but I uninstalled it before installing the release versions via a subscription - is there some way this may be causing the trouble.
