PS 2019 CC 20.0.6 versus MacOS Catalina
When I'm trying to save a project file in PS, it's always stopped the saving method and the file becomes unusable. So I always must to make projects from the start... When will come the fixes? Does anyone know any solution? :'(

@yves

So I try on an external ssd thunderbolt 2 and everything works fine .. so it comes from the exfat or usb ...

I have just made 2 new tries, macOS PS 21.0.1 10.15.1
New file in PS, Recorded under fichier.psd towards an external disc formated in APFS, no recording, the same file, without leaving limps her with dialogue of recording, but on the office, therefore internal disc HD in APFS also, recording without problem. Idem but towards an external formated disc USB2 MacOS.
There is a problem between Adobe and Apple towards external disc formated APFS!

Not true, and external SSD for both thunderbolt 2 and USB has the same issue. The save won't complete, and the process corrupts the file in use.

Do not use ExFAT formatted drives with Catalina. Reformat them HFS Extended or APFS (Mac formats, not Windows.)

I've been experiencing this problem since updating to Catalina (currently v. 10.15.2) and Photoshop 2020 (currently v. 21.0.2). I save my files on a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatted external drive. Initially I thought there was a problem with the drive until I realised it was directly related to saving and sometimes opening a file in Photoshop. I've literally lost hours of work trying to narrow this down. As an example of what's happening:

Yesterday I was working on a 200mb PSD. I tried to open another file (both files on the external disk) and get the spinning beach ball and the file never opens. Photoshop is unusable and you can't quit. I had to do a force quit. Then I had to restart the system to restart Photoshop, it won't open again without restarting. Both the file that was open and the file I was trying to open when the crash happened are now corrupt. I have backups but have lost around 3 hours of work since the last backup.

This has happened 4 or 5 times over the last few days. It basically renders Photoshop unusable until there's a fix, I just can't trust it to save the files I'm working on without corrupting them. In years of Photoshop I don't ever remember an issue as bad as this occurring after a system or app update.

This is exactly the same behavior of PS that I've experienced when I was saving my file on the external exFAT drive. Changing formatting from exFAT to Mac Os Extended (Journaled) seems to resolve the problem on my machine though. At least for now...

Further to my last post, I updated to PS 21.0.3 yesterday. Now if I try to save a PSD to my external drive (Mac OS ExtendedJournaled) I get the error -

Could not save as “xxxxxx-MASTER.psd” because the file name was not valid.

I've also tried saving as a different file format (TIFF etc).

I also can't open files directly from my internal drive, every file is greyed out in the 'File > Open' dialogue box. I have to go to the finder and open them from there.

Any fix on this yet?? I have the newest Photoshop and I have not been able to save since I updated the latest OSX yesterday. (I can't save to hard drive or desktop). I had to export my current file to a JPEG, and then work on an older version of Photoshop....

Hi Lindsey, it sounds like you're hitting a different issue since you're not able to save to the desktop. This issue only applies to saving to external drives formatted for xFAT. Contact support directly if you need help troubleshooting: https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html

Thank you! Saving to the Desktop seemed to work, once I forced quit Photoshop and reopened. (I am guessing because it was stuck on trying to save the first file to the external) I am just going to use 2019 for now...

I've spoken to Apple and it seems that a number of people have the same issue. The workaround is to erase your hard drive (after saving everything) and re-installing Mojave and photoshop 2020 should then work. But in the meantime can anyone suggest how I save my unsaved PS file before I re-install Mojave?! Thanks 🙂
