P: i7-1195G7 (new HP Spectre laptop) crashes OpenCL in Photoshop

I recently bought an HP Spectre X360 14 with an i7-1195G7 (and 16GB RAM & 1TB SSD with Optane cache) running Windows 11 Pro (21H2, build 22000.438.)

Photoshop (v.23.1.1) crashes when doing something as basic as applying a Smart Sharpen filter unless I disable Graphics Acceleration, specifically using OpenCL, within Photoshop. I'd like to be able to experience the benefits of Graphics Acceleration in Photoshop.

Yesterday I updated the Intel graphics driver on my device from v 27.20.100.8664 (dated 6/1/2021) to v 30.0.101.1191 (dated 12.3.2921) and Photoshop was auto-updated three days ago, but the problem persists.

I don't see any other reports of such problems, but would like to know if there is any way to resolve this. I live in Mexico and had flown to New York City just to buy this computer, and I'm considering flying back to NYC to return it. Do I have a defective computer, or can this be fixed?

Thanks for the crash reports. Engineers will probably want to see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

One other thing, is this a laptop that uses a docking station by chance?

@J453 :  Thanks for the replies.  While I was waiting I decided to use System Restore to step forward from the oldest restore point to see (a) if the problem was there from the beginning, and (b) if it were not there see at what point in time it started.

System-Restore.jpg

I started by restoring the oldest restore point (#1 above - sorry about the file size, Resize Image also crashes Photoshop...) and I could apply a Smart Sharpen filter with all the Graphics Acceleration enabled.  No crash.  I did note at this point, Photoshop was v.23.1.0.

Next, I used a later restore point (#2 above) and by then Photoshop already was crashing with Smart Sharpen.

(I wanted to step back through the intermediate restore points, but apparently Microsoft "enhanced" System Restore:  It removes earlier restore points once you've used one *and* no longer permits rolling back the application of a restore point.)

At that point I was frustrated & did a complete Windows Reset.  The second app I installed on a clean Windows (after Vivaldi browser) was Photoshop.  Of course, Creative Cloud installed v. 23.1.1.  It crashes.  I'm not sure if it's the v.23.1.1 that is the culprit, or if , when Windows was re-installed, some other updates came into play.  Sorry.

>>"Thanks for the crash reports. Engineers will probably want to see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply."<<

No can do.  Photoshop > Help > System Info freezes Photoshop.  Not crash it, just freeze it.  Have to End Task in Task Manager.

>>"One other thing, is this a laptop that uses a docking station by chance?"<<

Yes, it is.  However, the crashes occur without the dock attached, i.e. just using the built-in laptop screen.  In fact, right now, I haven't yet attached the dock at all since Windows was reset and the crashes (and the new freeze) occur.

Not sure if this is of any help, but here's the text from an error report that Photoshop created.  It was from a crash on 25-January-2022:

@J453 : Okay, I found the culprit:

open-cl-gl-compat-pak.gif

I had done another Windows Reset.  Photoshop still crashed.  I started down the list of  Apps & Features in Windows and one-by-one uninstalled almost all of them with a reboot after every 5 or 6 and tested Photoshop.  When I finally worked my way down to OpenCL and OpenGL Compatibility Pack and rebooted – voila! – I could apply a Smart Filter and Resize Image with no freezes or crashes.

Now my concern is:  what am I giving up by not having that compatibility pack uninstalled?

@Daniel Presedo , @J453 :

Am I kneecapping (i.e. artificially restraining) Photoshop in any way by not having that Compatibility Pack?

On a Microsoft page, I found this explanation of what that Compatibility Pack does:

This compatibility pack allows more of your favorite OpenCL™ and OpenGL® apps to run on a Windows 10 PC that doesn't have OpenCL and OpenGL hardware drivers installed by default. If a DirectX 12 driver is installed, supported apps will run with hardware acceleration for better performance. This package supports apps that use OpenCL version 1.2 and earlier and OpenGL version 3.3 and earlier."

... but I don't know how that relates to Photoshop performance.  e.g.  Am I even getting any acceleration by enabling "Use Graphics Processor" in Preferences > Performance?

@wpcoe , the Compatibility Pack is only useful to Photoshop when installed on ARM hardware.

https://devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/announcing-the-opencl-and-opengl-compatibility-pack-for-windo....

Your GPU has support for OCL and OGL, so no need to fall back to a software emulator.

Do you know if Photoshop may have installed that compatibility pack on your system, or if it came through some other installation?

@Mark.Dahm :  Thank you!

I had assumed it came pre-installed on my HP Spectre computer, since I didn't install it manually.  I have no idea if Photoshop might have installed it, though.  I'm actually not interested in doing another Windows "Reset" just to see. 🙂

@wpcoe , thank you; you've done more than your fair share to get us this far! Thank you for the detective work. Anybody else perusing the forums will benefit from your discovery, and I'll keep a mental note to add looking for the compatibility pack when we encounter your symptoms again.
