Hi @J453 see below, first one is save copy as and the second is quick export as png,

note the individual logos outer glow is missing from the second.

Perfect. I can repro with the file. I'll have engineering investigate.

As a workaround, Save for Web also exports it correctly and will produce a small file like Export As.

Thank you for the file. I see that this behavior is due to a complicated compositing issue. It may manifest in Export As but I also see it with the Crop tool. When you change the size of the crop area, the layer effects disappear (they reappear when you apply or leave the crop change). There are probably other places where this behavior would occur as well.

The behavior, for some reason, stems from the hidden Hue/Saturation adjustment layer just above the dj logos layer group. It has something to do with the clipping mask applied. If you disable the clipping mask or delete the layer, the layer effects will also be removed right away. Going to Export As must make this layer be completely ignored (as if the clipping mask were removed/the layer were deleted), thus causing the effects to disappear. Strangely, if you turn on the Outer Glow layer effect on the dj logos layer group, it will also make the other layer effects stick around (but it will change their appearance a bit).

However, there is an easy workaround which will fix this issue. Just change the blending mode of the dj logos layer group from Pass Through to Normal. The effects won't change and they stick around in Export As. The Normal blend mode on a layer group will create a sub-composite of all the layers within the group. That is, it treats all those layers as a flattened layer with regard to how they interact with other layers outside the group (such as other ajustment layers and clipping masks). We'll likely need to run this by our layer compositing team to see what the full answer to this issue is.

Thanks for the reply and feeback

yes... I tend so leave some disabled layers hanging around when experimenting with compositions. that said, I would still expect the various exporting methods to save the same resulting composition as on screen! hope this'll get fixed in 23.0.1? 🙂

take care and thanks again.

Unfortunately, we already released 23.0.1, so this will have to wait for a future update.

Found a couple other workarounds:

  • Make the Hue/Saturation layer (which is the root of the issue) visible but transparent. That is, click the eye to turn it back on but reduce the Opacity to 0%. The image is exactly the same, but how the compositing engine reads things, it still includes the layer effect.
  • Flatten layers: This often addresses weird compositing issues such as this one, however in other cases it can make them appear. It's a bit clumsy because you generally need to undo before saving and closing the file. Would consider this as the last resort.
