P: Move tool targeting imprecise

Move Tool annoyance in Photoshop CS6.
I use the move tool alot in my work, with high fidelity mockups for interface design. I rely on precision and predictability in my workflow. In Photoshop CS6 with the move tool set to auto-select layer, i would suspect the move tool to select the excact element im targeting at which it doesn't. it automatically selects nearby elements, which is a HUGE annoyance and disturbance. It ruins the workflow, and it's unpredicable.

Is there at least an option to remove this behaviour and just make it precise as in previous versions of photoshop?

Could you provide more info about what you're seeing?

The layer auto select works right under the cursor.

But we have seen video driver problems that can cause the cursor to draw in the wrong place.

I've attached a picture. Say I'm trying to target the red box with move tool (with auto-select layer turned on).

The example-cursor i have drawn is 10px away from the black box. When I click and drag to move the element, you would expect that it selects and moves the red box. But instead it selects the black box - I experience it doing it up to 10px outside the element on top.

Know what i mean? Would this be a video driver problem?

That could be a video driver issue if the cursor is frequently off position from it's effect.

I have the same issue. And I'm pretty sure that Photoshop tries to "assist" the user with the selection but fails to do so.

It's recommended to have an option to turn off any assisting features (in software).

It only occurs with the move tool, other tools work fine.

I agree with Kaupo if that's the case. An ability to turn this off would be perfect. I like the rest of the new photoshop, but this bug/featuer is causing me not to upgrade in the company.

Is there no way to turn this off?

I also suffer from this problem. I need pixel perfect accuracy for my design work and this is EXTREMELY frustrating.

I've found exactly the same problem in my work. It's baffling to me that this is the only thread I've found about it.

To be more clear:

It seems to be a software 'assistance' feature to aid the user in selecting a layer. Each layer seems to have a clickable "halo" of 9px surrounding it (I measured!). Clicking within this area will select the foremost layer, rather than the layer behind it - even if the pointer is visually pointing to the layer in back.

The 9px remains constant regardless of the zoom level – so, I can work around the problem by zooming in and then clicking... but that's annoying.

This might be useful for folks doing less-detailed, pixel-perfect work, but for UI design it's super-frustrating. It's strange, because so many *other* features in PS6 have made UI work better. (vector shapes snapping to the pixel grid, etc.)

I agree that this should be turn-off-able with a checkbox - if not removed outright. 🙂

When this autoselect problem is afflicting your Move Tool, a better-than-nothing solution is to right-click on the problem area, which provides a context menu of the layers. At least it does on a Mac. Hopefully, it can be done in Windows, too.

Yeah, but when you sit with a +100 layers document, working all day long with this technique just isn't doable... I would rather work in Paint 😉
