So yes i know i am using a very old graphics card the 770M but things were working just fine until a few days ago when this new patch hit. Still running windows 10 like before.

Now i can't find a way to get scrubby zoom to work again, its just greyed out. Anyone else having issues?

Graphics processor is ticked on and under advanced settings use openCL and anti alias guides and paths are turned on. I have restarted my computer. I have reinstalled my graphics driver. Anything i can think of

This problem should be addressed by updating to Photoshop 2023 (v24.x)

Adobe Photoshop Version: 23.5.1

AMD 5950X +  6900XT (22.8.2)

I am more or less a full time photo editor. I work with massive files with countless layers and I perform a wide variety of actions.

As a final step: I make circles and text on images before I send them off to my retoucher.

I have had this problem for as long as I can remember now and I have finally found out the cause.

When I select the text tool and create a text layer... It breaks zoom with the spacebar and alt on windows 10.

The zoom hotkey works backwards and only in blocky steps. Perhaps it breaks the GPU control? I don't know. But it breaks zoom and it works backwards one step at a time. Any hand tool and zooming becomes blocky and not smooth.

I cannot use the text tool anymore until I'm ready to break zooming.

Is there a solution for this? Am I the only person with this issue?

  1. Is zoom broken only when you have an active text layer?
  2. Once you've created and then deselected a text layer, does the problem continue?

Which version of Photoshop and OS?
How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have?

what do you mean by "massive files" what dimension are they?

Why do the files need to be so large (what are they for)?

Windows 10 - PS version in original post

64GB RAM - 3 SSDs as scratch disks including a dedicated 128GB SSD with no files only for scratch.

I'm only working on flat 6MB jpegs here creating edit requests for my retoucher.

My purpose in mentioning the other stuff is that I push PS all day long. Yet creating a text layer breaks it.

Just did it as a test working on a flat 6mb jpeg.

I push T to select the text tool.

I get a moment spinning thing over the mouse cursor

Screen goes completely white for a second.

All movemement of the image with the hand tool is blocky and zoom only works outwards in blocks.

Ouch. Have you tried any of the following...

  1. Resetting the Photoshop Preferences.
  2. Updating Photoshop to the latest version.
  3. Trying a different version of Photoshop. The Creative Cloud app allows for multiple version of Photoshop to be simultaneously installed.
  4. Updating your graphics drivers.

I'm happy to step through these in more detail if you need.

Michael Bullo...

I've been using Photoshop professionally for longer than I can remember. 12-14 years?

I've been through a loooooot of bugs and problems in this time.

Telling someone to "reset their preferences" without explaining they need to back them up first is potentally catastrophic for anyone who has created a workflow using those preferences.

I can't tell you how many times I have "reset my preferences" as a suggestion to fix a problem only to find I haven't been reminded to back them up first and resetting preferences didn't actully fix the problem, it' only created a new mountain of problems because all of my preferences are gone!

I don't have the time or the patience to try different versions of photoshop to see if it happens in older versions as well. I just updated my graphics drivers. Same thing.

Is it possible it is a bug and not my fault somehow for having evil preferences that need to be deleted?

I apologise if that seems ranty. If you're going to throw out "reset your preferences" as a fix all you should recommend backing preferences up first in case that does not solve the problem.

Thanks

Hi, I would first try to note your text settings, then reset the text tool itself: right-click the tool icon in the option bar, you might want to use the local hamburger menu of the character and paragraph panels to reset them too.

Did you check this helpx document ?

https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop.html

Did you try to check "deactivate native canvas" in preferences/technology preview (then restart Ps)?

@xxCounterpoinTxx your remark about a proper reset preferences procedure reminded me of a suggestion I wanted to make: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-ideas/reset-preferences-should-back-them-up-inclu...

Thank you for the sysinfo @Khauz21996545x6of, a couple other things to try:

Go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck Multithreaded Compositing - and restart Photoshop. Does the problem persist?

Go to Preferences > Performance... click Advanced Settings... and uncheck "GPU Compositing" - then restart Photoshop. Does the problem still occur?

Thank you,

Hi @CoryShubert .
I tried both methods, but they didn't work. As soon as I start the Type Tool, Photoshop starts lagging.
As I mentioned before, it seems to me that this issue is related to "Native Canvas". Not sure.

Thanks!

Hi @Khauz21996545x6of, the team suggests:

"Windows falls out of GPU mode if Deactivate native canvas is turned on. You may uncheck Deactivate Native Canvas, restart and all should be good, or use the current Beta, which fixes the issue."

Thank you,

@CoryShubert Thanks for the fast reply!
The thing is that when Deactivate native canvas is turned off, the entire Photoshop gets a bit slow and all menus and popups start flickering.
When it's on, Photoshop works fine. However, when the Type tool is activated, Photoshop starts to lag as I described before.

Ok. Engineering says that it's fixed in the Beta release. Instructions for accessing the beta release here: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/creative-cloud-beta.html If that works for you, that fix should be in the next major release.

Glad the Deactivate Native Canvas fix worked for you. Have seen some traffic
that indicates issues with the Text Tool, when the Deactivate is checked.
Did not encounter that my end.

There is new Studio driver 517.40 for nVidia GPU's which is dated to 09/20/2022. I didn't have any problem so no changes for me. Have anyone with problems tried to install latest studio driver? I am using GeForce Experience to update, by the way.

@Bojan Živković ,

I upgraded to the 9/20 release and the problem still occurred in the shipping version (you have to have 'Deactivate native canvas' checked and restart to see the issue).

  • On Mac, the problem is the screen goes black while you're editing text.
  • On Windows, the problem is that the screen flashes momentarily, then scrubby zoom (an option with the magnifying glass tool) grays out.

To be clear this also affects AMD graphics users.

I have the same problem on Windows 10 with 6900XT and latest AMD drivers (22.9.1)

Beta version 24.1 solves the problem on my computer. (Nvidia Quadro K5000 with the latest driver) without the need to opt-in "Deactivate Native Canvas".

While last working version without that issue for me is 23.4.2 and I work with it.

The last version 23.5.1 deactivates the scrubby zoom once I start text typing (this is with deactivated native canvas, otherwise it doesn't work at all).
