P: Photoshop 23.0 - cannot open TIF files, generated in other programs

Guide ,
Oct 27, 2021 Oct 27, 2021

Copied

Starting from version 22.5.2 Photoshop stopped opening some tif files. The issue is related to a previously discovered vulnerability, the escalation of which, under certain conditions, may lead to arbitrary code execution - Adobe Security Bulletin.

Important: The problem is not with Photoshop, but with third-party software developers who do not keep track of current TIF specifications

A temporary solution to the problem is to convert files in third-party editors that completely update the structure of TIF files (for example, xnView, ImageMagik, etc.); such files can also be converted using the Camera Raw plug-in (via Bridge).

We all hope that Adobe can solve this problem and find a way to bring third-party files to modern standard. But I recommend that you independently contact the developers of programs whose files Photoshop cannot open. Notify them of the problem, recommend to contact @J453 using this community. Jeffrey can provide technical information to developers to solve this problem.

If you're still having trouble with TIFFs created/saved by software that's still being developed, please share the following information with them:

Photoshop’s TIFF parser had a buffer overrun security vulnerability in its synthesized calculation of the Image File Directory entry RowsPerStrip (278).

The fix for that was to reject TIFF files that did not provide the required RowsPerStrip (278) entry. Under the rationale that this IFD entry is required, as per the TIFF specification.

This change was originally made to reject Tiff files that lacked an attribute which could pose a security risk. Engineering is working on a change to amend that behavior to calculate the missing attribute when not provided, but only under the constraint that the calculation can be made with fidelity and not cause the security vulnerability.

For now, you can install the prior version to open tiffs from a trusted source. Install previous versions of your Creative Cloud apps

:headdesk: There is a security issue. Opening the files could pwn your computer. Adobe is doing the responsible thing here.

I am unable to open TIFF images created by OrthoVista. Can anyone help?! I tried going back to 22.5.2 and it still doesn't not work.

I spent a few day of doing a workaround while I waited to be contacted by an Adobe rep regarding this issue (I would open my TIFF files in image preview on my Mac, then resave them, which would then allow me to open them in PS23).  After speaking with an Adobe rep I was told to download the older version to use until the V23 issues were resolved.  I've done that but now the TIFF files that I had opened and worked on in V23 will now not open in V22?!  These files are for a book I'm putting together so it looks like I'll need to run both versions of PS until this matter is resolved, it's incredibly time consuming and I was told that a fix is still 2 - 3 months away, is this correct?

Then go through the thread for more details and the solution. Say what other apps you use...

The question is whether it works like before 22.5.2 or it updates incompatible tiff's while opening?

Excellent!

I can open again all the TIFF files created in Capture One and SNS-HDR Pro, in Ps 22 and Ps 23 without problems.

Thank you very much for your help.
Best regards.

It sounds like you need to go to the source of your TIFF images and point out that they appear to be non compliant. As Jeffrey stated earlier a fix was being applied in Photoshop to calculate the missing information, but only where that could be done securely.

What is the source of those TIFFs?

Dave

I've let DEFRA know about your update Mohit, so we'll see what happens. Your latest release won't open their TIFFs so they must still have an 'un-checked' box in their TIFF builder somewhere. : )

I still can't open my TIFFs in 23.0.1, getting the "can't open because not the right type of document" error message. I can't regenerate these, they were created by a vendor who has already completed the digitization, and we don't have Capture One. I am using Windows 10 and they were produced with Capture One 9 Macintosh.

These TIFFs are output by OrthoVista (a Trimble program).

Try the "convert" command (*.tif to *.tif) from the "imageMagik" package . It supports layers, documents up to 32-bit, and is fast and predictable.
When converting, it completely updates all tags and files in Photoshop open without problems. I used it to convert a lot of color tables for profiling - no problem.

Hi Jazz-y,

I couldn't find the 'Convert' comand so just opened my un-openable 32bit TIF in imageMagik and resaved it and it now opens in Photoshop! Thank you so much!

I'm not sure if they're DEFRA tiffs or not. I create large orthomosaics from raw data. I can gladly send an example if that's helpful.

Oh, I'm sorry. For batch processing of files, I use the command line and legacy version. Anyway, it's good that you found the GUI and were able to solve your problem.

FYI: None of the GeoTIFFs from the "Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority" work either. Like someone else said about contacting the Department for Environment Food & Rular Affairs, I'm sure getting a fix to their TIFF export system quickly implemented by a government agency is mostly wishful thinking. And all previously downloaded files still don't work obviously.  We were able to install an older PS version where they work fortunately, but not an ideal workflow.
