P: Photoshop 23.2.2 Can't open/update vector smart object in Illustrator

Just today, I updated to macOS Monterey and now I am having problems opening vector smart objects in Photoshop files. If Illustrator is closed, when I double click the smart object (or choose edit contents) Illustrator will launch but the file will not open.

If Illustrator is open and I try to open the smart object, I get a Mac error window that says "The application "Adobe Illustrator 2022" can't be opened" with a -1703 error code.

I'm using Photoshop 23.2.1 and Illustrator 26.0.3, which I went back to after seeing the problem first occur in 26.1.

The computer is iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch 2019  |  3.6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9  |  macOS Monterey 12.3

Thanks in advance

This should be resolved in macOS 12.3.1 that just went out.

Just in my case, with the transform tools in Photoshop, I may have found my problem. Changed my scratch disk from a fast flash drive back to my fast internal and it may have fixed it. Not sure yet. I'll know after I work for a few hours today.

No official solution to this yet. Try to survive it by pasting your vector artwork with checking ‘add to your current library’ (then you can edit/update the object through the Library) or… use Smart Object properties panel, then convert embedded object to linked-one.
Save it the location U wish, then you’re able to (re)edit it freely.

We are all waiting Adobe/Apple do something – but for now, we can only count on… our skills an trick 😉

Still no answer from Adobe. The 'fix' that's been verified is just a workaround.
Working as a full-time graphic designer from home. Smart objects are a HUGE deal when working in photoshop.
I'm shocked that this has been nearly a week since any sign of life from adobe. Its a massive flaw that yes, we can export contents, saved as linked files. But that's not a long-term solution for many. It causes issues when sending photoshop files to others, it causes MAJOR issues long-term.

Adobe + Monterey. A match made [removed by moderator].

If you want to get updates on the process, please vote for the bug on Uservoice.

When it is solved, I would expect an answer in this thread.

I get the "the application adobe illustrator 2022 can be opened -1703" message. When I want to open a smart object from Photoshop, it gives me this message and it does not open. Illustrator is working fine. I have no problem opening any .ai file or pdf file. I am using mac m1. please help me.

That in my opinion is not a permenant fix, it's hard and unpractical. Especially if you are working on an object in illustrator and bringing it to Photoshop without saving the file.

PHOTOSHOP AND MONTEREY SYSTEM ERROR - 1703

After the last Monterey update, using Photoshop if I try to edit (by clicking twice on it) an illustrator file (or any other program) instead of opening the program, I get this error in a system window and not in photoshop:

“Cannot open the “Adobe Illustrator 2022” application.

-1703

I emphasize that illustrator is open, but the file NO, and give me the error.

STILL NO UPDATE - NO LONG-TERM FIX FROM ADOBE.
As per my last post we've still yet to receive any official comment back from Adobe. This process is incredibly painful. For all the users posting workarounds thank you, but as mentioned these are workarounds this is NOT a long-term solution. And for many, this process of saving to store files now in a permanent location as opposed to a temporary file location is NOT sustainable. Until this has been resolved by Adobe we'll of course continue to find short-term solutions, but please can we get some verified response from Adobe on this matter.

PLEASE UPVOTE THIS TO BRING ATTENTION TO THE PROBLEM

Same issue here. Apple suggested that Adobe users downgrade the affected apps while they work on a solution.

@genteboa.pedro This is a clueless suggestion on Adobe's part after a week of feedback that this bug also affects previous versions of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. My own workaround "solution" was to re-install the previous operating system (Monterey 12.2.1) which wasn't easy, wasn't able to be done throught official Apple sources and took way too long to implement, but allowed me to retain my previously efficient workflow.

...er... adding the correction to my previous post. Mis-read that it was Adobe's suggestion. Still. downgrading Adobe apps solves nothing with this bug.

Unfortunately that is not working. We downgraded to lowest AI and PS and still have issue with 12.3 OS. Other than the workaround band aids that you've seen on here, the best solution until they actually fix is downgrade from 12.3 OS to 12.2 OS. which is a pain in the fanny because you have to create a bootable installer. We have not done it because we always get freaked out erasing our macs and using terminal (even with everything backed up). Link to bootable instructions if you dare! https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372
