P: Photoshop 26.6.0 is selecting non-current canvases

THe latest version of Photoshop has a new very annoying bug! If you have multiple canvases open in photoshop, it constantly keep selecting the underlying/non current canvases especially when they are hidden behind the canvas you are working on. Therefore you need to keep each canvas distant from eachother or open as few images as possible. This is super annoying! See video
PS! Rolling back to Photoshop 25.5 and it works. 26.0 and 26.1 the bug appears. 
Can you please fix this asap adobe!?

@donbarrum I just tested on my system with Photoshop version 26.6 and cannot reproduce the issue, have you tried manually resetting your Photoshop preferences

I've had to revert back to version 26.0.0 as the latest updates won't allow active documents in windows to come to the front to work on.

Steps (have the latest Photoshop 26.6.1 or 26.6 or 26.5)

1. Have tabbed workspace unchecked in preferences

2. Open a new document which opens in its own window

3. Open a second document and it opens in behind the exisitng document

4. Click on the top of the window behind (which is the current document) and it remains behind the first window

5. Click on the window in front THEN click on the second document window and it pulls it to the front

Photoshop Beta (current version) works as expected. Photoshop 26.0.0 works as expected. Newer versions do not. Very frustrating when working in full screen mode as Tab will not bring palettes to the front.

Thanks, I tried reset the settings. I dunno if that information is incorrect witht he latest version. When I hold down ctrl-shift-alt and lauch photoshop, I get asked to load or not load third party plugins. after that photoshop is completely the same, with my old settings.

@donbarrum close Photoshop if it's opened and then type %appdata% in the file explorer address bar to open the roaming folder, from there navigate to Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2025

There's a folder called Adobe Photoshop 2025 Settings, rename that to Adobe Photoshop 2025 Settings.old

A new settings folder will be created when you open Photoshop again

I've noticed this too—it's like Photoshop keeps "peeking" through to the canvases underneath, even when they're not in focus. It completely breaks the workflow when you're doing detail work and suddenly get switched to another document. Hope Adobe addresses this in a hotfix soon.

I have now reset Photoshop settings. the problem is still there. Maybe you do not have a tablet. But this happens when I use a wacom. If I have two images that overlaps and I paint on one of them, photoshop suddenly choose to switch to the underlying layer and start paint there instead. Extremely annoying.

Yeah, I reset photoshop settings, it did not fix it. I cant have any images overlapping when working. it just flip flops between them.

You didn't mention in your original post that you are using a Wacom tablet, do you have the same issue with the mouse, I'll test it after work with my home PC which has a Wacom tablet

Yeah it happens with a mouse as well. Im on windows 11. 
Some times it stops happening so I do not know what's causing it. But it usually happens a lot after opening Photoshop.

Photoshop, latest version, operating on Windows 11 Pro.

Keep coming accross an issue when I have multiple documents open, in their own floating windows (not tabs). Sometime the current window/document I am working on, remains active for me to continue editing but somehow is behind another document, sometimes behind multiple inactive document. I have attached a screen grab that kind of illustrates the issue.

To rectify the problem I have to select the title bar of each and every document that is somehow in front of my active document, before clicking back to the active one and it is finaly in front. It isnt a major problem, but bit of an irritation when editing mutiple images and needing to jump back and forth between them all.

Anyone come accross this and know if its a simple setting change I need to do or something? It only started this past week or so.

That is weird. I now tried on my office computer, which is a different setup. With the a Wacom Cintiq 27, and it happens there as well. So then it happens on both my computers. Even after reseting preferences. So clearly a new bug.

How can I get  someone from Adobe to look into this??? Because working now in Photoshop is really become problematic. If I'm painting one one image and pick color from another image, even if they don't overlap, Photoshop keeps constantly switching between the two images, when I pick the color. It's truly ruining the workflow of Photoshop.

This makes it very difficult to work. It happens both with mouse and tablet on my wacom. So if I paint and try to pick color from another image it fli+ frlops between the two  canvases. So it makes it very difficult to work. If the two images overlap you can't even work, because every brush stroke flips between the two canvases. 
This is happening with both my PC's which have different hardware and setup. I have tried to reset the preferences, didnt help!

Can you please fix this asap adobe!?

Unfortunately you haven't given us any information about your system. Therefore, all proposed solutions are a look into the crystal ball. But it seems there's a issue with the compatibility with the graphic device and/or graphic device driver.

Please provide a copy of your 'System Info'. This can be get from the Photoshop menu item Help > System Info. There's a copy button in the System Info dialog. Press this button and paste the info into your next forum post.

Is your system up-to-date? Do you have installed all recent updates and patches for the operating system and the device drivers, especially the graphic driver. If you have a NVidia graphic card installed, make sure that you are using the recent Studio version of the driver, not the Game Ready version.

In a first step try to reset the preferences of Photoshop using the steps described here:

I have the latest updated version of Windows 11, my Geforce drivers are the latest (current) studio drivers. And as mentioned I have also reset Photoshop preferences based on the guidelines. I tried rolling back the nvidia driver and install the game driver, no improvement. Then I started rolling back photoshop. 25.6.1 has the problem, 25.6.0 has the problem - 26.5 its all fine! So it's clearly a bug that appeared in 25.6. 

So I guess I'll have to stick to 25.5 until the Adobe team listens.

Hi thanks for answering. 
It is a bit difficult for me to send a numbered list on how to reproduce, because for me its happening constantly
It's slightly better in version Pshop 26.7.0, when painting (but that might just be an happy accident). 
One very easy way for me to reproduce it is:
1. Open 2-3 images in photoshop which overlaps. 
2. paint a couple of layers on the top image (not mandatory, it happens when only trying to select any of the layers). 
3. try to ctrl+click on the layers on the top image and it will switch to any random underlying canvas/image. If it doesnt happen, then try to start ctrl click on the layers of the underlying canvases and see if it selects the correct canvases. 

PS! this is just one simple way for me to reproduce it. But it happens basically ALL the time as mentioned - when selecting layers, or painting etc etc..... I've included a video to show the step by step for me to reproduce it.  As you see on the video it even starts when I open a 3rd image even before I click anything the 3rd image is openen underneath the 2nd image. ANd when I click on the various images it randomly put the wrong images in front.

@Claire H.  Do you know when this will be looked into ? I experience this on both my PC's - both have different hardware - So I assume this is a widespread issue. And it makes photoshop very hard to work in.
