P: PNG Images Opens with Distortion

From time to time, when I open a png image, it will appear as bright, distorted lines.

I have deleted all Photoshop preference files, uninstalled the app, reinstalled it and restarted the computer. Does not prevent it from happening.

When it happens, I can quit Photoshop and reopen it and the png appears correctly. But then it will happen again later that day or the next. Rinse/Repeat.

Very annoying. Please get better quality control Photoshop. CC seems to get progressively worse in terms of bugs.

This PNG distortion issue should be fixed with the Photoshop CC 2018 (19.1.2) update which is now available.
Please install the update and let us know if you still see this issue.

To update, click Update next to Photoshop CC in the Creative Cloud desktop application.
If you don't see the update right away, click the 3 dots in the upper right and choose Check for App Updates.

Regards
Pete

I am having the same issue, so frustrating. Running a clean install on a brand new mac. Really don't know what to do. Are there alternate graphics solutions anyone can suggest?

This worked for opening the .pngs but now I am getting too many errors when creating new documents. Will revert to 2017 in the meantime!

100% of the time I open a .png from file > open, when I drag a .png into an artboard, and when I drag the file to the photoshop app

This is happening for me at least once a day. Restart Photoshop and seems to temporarily fix the problem. Although, not the most convenient method. Doesn't matter what the PNG is because once restarted it works fine. Only happening since I updated to CC 2018.

Getting the same thing. Does go away after restart though. Even weirder is that if I save out one of the broken PNG's using 'save for web', it RE-breaks it making a totally new set of mashed up glitches!

If a png is the first file type I open after starting Photoshop, they work.  once I have been using PS for a while, opening other file types etc. then the same file (and all png files in general) will show up as a corrupted image, similar to the other images in this thread.  Haven't identified the exact instance where they go from working to not working.

Same here... Almost all PNGs are scrambled in PS 19.1.0.

I've unchecked "Use Graphics Processor" in preferences and this seems to help, but this isn't a good long-term solution.

I am using a 2017 MacBook Pro with Intel Iris Graphics 650.

Hi,
I am commercially using Photoshop here in Finland with hundreds of PNGs each day. I am having the same problem, but I can add that the colour effect I am getting is a mixture of previously worked on files. Adobe took over my Mac yesterday and did a whole load of resetting of everything, and it worked briefly OK - but now bad again.
I would love a solution to this...

Aha!!!

Hooray, or rather 'booo' but my PNG issue is back.

Hooray - in that it means I can have a proper look at Hannah's suggestions and see how they work.

Booo - in that I'm right in the middle of a job again and really don't have time to do this!

Opened up a string of PNGs I've literally just generated from a psd and I got this...

RackMultipart2018020273453vvod-a0867171-7743-4a29-b6f9-9163f49a7d7e-23002222.png

RackMultipart20180202857181mpi-4c9d6fb3-5ded-4228-b8bd-ee259e77b779-1463896643.png

(all of 14 them were screwy)

Here is one of them dropped into the post...

RackMultipart2018020234890hqg4-cef3ddc3-d8ea-42d1-bebe-5493232a49b5-2026697149.png

looks fine here.

So I turned off the 'Use Graphics Processor' option and then re-opened them and again...

RackMultipart20180202857181bnu-06d57fae-11fe-4e0a-bbaa-af308912aa79-647083160.png

NB the same file has a different glitch look.

I've got the same System's Info as the one I posted but I can re-copy/paste if that's helpful?

Can I ask that everyone in this thread who is seeing this problem please click "Me Too" on this issue? The issues we track get ranked by that number and it sounds to me like there are more people seeing this than the vote would seem to indicate.

haha I'm sorry Jim. Way to find a silver lining. I submitted the case on this one and I'm adding more details to it as they come in about what's working and what's not. The hardest thing about this issue is that as of yet no one here has seen the same behavior. But thanks for adding more files and info!

I reverted back to the 2017 version right away as well since everything was working fine on that release. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to work around the fault or record anything, I had to get working again pretty quick. But I was having the exact same issues outlined by everyone else here. Whenever I saved to PNG from my PSD doc I got a scrambled mess. Restarting solved temporarily on a single file but not across all files.

I did check to see if this distortion was only viewable on the affected computer / software, or if it was in fact a corrupted file - and the distortion carried over to every other program on every other computer.

Thank you to everyone working hard to resolve this!

I've noticed a few other strange behaviors that all seem to occur with PNG files.

I do a lot of screenshots for mockups and I am often simply using macOS's built-in screenshot tools to create PNGs of running applications.  This started very recently, but when I open those PNG screenshots in PS (19.1.0) I am presented with the following dialog...

 RackMultipart20180202536281tdr-df87a1ec-3776-4500-895c-426f1802c8ba-602071165.png

In addition, PNGs are often blank when opening with the image only appearing when I move the window.  Then, toggling layers in these file on-off these files (PNGs) has no effect.  Watch this screen capture video of my trying to open the PNG image of the dialog above and be prepared to be puzzled.

EDIT:  Sorry, CloudApp wasn't cooperating, so here it is on YouTube...

The toggling on-off of layers issue has even occured with PSD files, but a restart of PS seems to fix those.

I've never seen behavior like this before in prior PS versions.

Here too. Software is also extremely slow to open and layers lag, even in a very small project. I'm running the latest software.
