P: Program error when saving, lag when zooming, changes not reflecting in document window (macOS)

LEGEND ,
Dec 09, 2020 Dec 09, 2020

Since the 22.1 update, MAJOR bugs:

- ‘could not save because of a program error’ when saving, work around: hiding a few layers or folders.

- major lag when zooming in

- actions and changes delay in showing, to the point where they never show up - once I close the document and quit Photoshop and go back in the changes are  visible.

what’s going on??

Reposting this from *ishal ismail, which solved the problem for me. Many thanks, Ishal!

Here is my fix, I'm on macOS Catalina V10.15.6, PS V22. I gave PS Full Disk Access and restarted the system, seems like it has fixed the problem for now.

You can go to System preferences > Security & Privacy > Full Disk Access ( You can find it on the left side pane > and add PS to the list by pressing the small + icon you can find on the bottom of the left-side pane.

Also, you need to unlock the pri

@JeffreyTranberry How do we deal with the fact that photoshop is having a lot of problems lately and prices have gone up?

I have spent a long time trying to overcome this issue - I have tried:

1. quitting Photoshop

2. resetting preferences to default

3. hiding all the layers except the background layer then saving, which works but is no good as I need to then save the file in a different format which is won't do

4. the generator is not enabled as someone suggested that

5. I have also tried with the graphics processor on and off - someone suggested that.

Please help.

I'm facing the same issue. Last week an Adobe Consultant helped me and fixed my the problem. But today I'm back at the same problem: Program error when saving.

I'm tired of following instructions of technical support, that is their job, but in the end, they suggest we use the version 21.2.4 that is working just fine.

@JeffreyTranberry  Please put me on the list. As you know many of us are  working professionals and the inability to save files is more than frustrating especially on deadline.

Thank you,

@JeffreyTranberry HI, I have the same problem and even worse . many of my commands on Photoshop don’t work, like Save, Save as, New file, Open. I can only open old files and do my new work there and save with command+S . from today also command+S doesn’t work. I have already tried all solution links that you put here but non of them works, even with older versions I have the same problem (the oldest one that I can download from creative cloud is 21.2.4). Please help me in solving this problem.

IF YOU ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM:

Step 1:

Turn off all the layers in your drawing including the background

Step 2:

Save the document (it should let you save when you shut off all the layers) and close Photoshop 2021. (DO NOT CLOSE PHOTOSHOP UNTIL THE FILE SAVES WITH THE LAYERS OFF WITHOUT THE ERROR MESSAGE)

-The file will save as blank in your file explorer but the layers will still be in the                file

Step 3:

In the Creative Cloud App, remove Photoshop 22.1 and redownload Photoshop 21.2.4 (this is Photoshop 2020)

Step 4:

Reopen your file, turn on all the layers and save the file again.

This method saved the file I had poured hours into and I will continue to work in Photoshop 2020 until the program bugs with 2021 are fixed. Hope this helps some people.

I'm having this same issue too on Windows 10.  With both 22.01 and 22.1.  Have had to reinstall 21.2.4 to see if that helps as it did before.  This is the second time it's happened (the first being the week leading up to Xmas - my busiest trading week of the year) and only reinstalling an older version seems to work.  Won't print from the direct print menu under file, won't merge layers, won't flatten anything ??

Hello, I'm experiencing the same problem as many other people reported. This is extremely concerning since you can't work properly. I'm working of an imac 1.6 ghz dual-core intel core i5, running Catalina. I start getting this problem a week ago. It started as random but now is getting worst. I'm running the latest CS2020 version of photoshop v 22.1.0

@bkorb I believe invites were sent by my colleague.  If not, let me know and I'll follow-up.

*dralt , we like to maintain a diverse group of PreRelease.  So we would be very happy to hear from hobbyists too.  Adding to the invite list is very simple and not limited at all.

I have not yet gotten an invite.

To be clear: in the world of software, I'm not a hobbyist. 🙂

@bkorb @andrew_sender
by hobbyist I meant that I'm not use ps on professional. Right now I have many photos to edit, but not working with ps daily. That's why I said that someone can use this oppurtinity more.
Now I understand what Jeffrey said that it's not that easy to reproduce the problem, bc can't follow when I run into and when not.
Since it's not limited so if I can help, than thx for the add, and will try to be use.
One thing though, that I can't understand why adobe not giving us an update which is reverting the latest until they finding the problem, they can do a public/large wide test too.
So thx andrew if You can add me, I will try to help

Different user. Same problem. Update 22.1.1 doesn't fix continuous program errors when exporting, flattening, or duplicating. Cannot save any files.

Have encountered problem after problem when trying to save files, change brushes, merge layers. All give me a popup window titled program error. Have found a loophole around it where if you turn off all the layers besides the bottom most one and save it can. However, still unable to work and view the physical final files to save as PNG's and JPEGS for use and for clients. Photoshop has become utterly useless.

@bkorb at this point both PreRelease and 22.1.1 contain the fix.  But you're still welcome to join PreRelease and trial our latest updates (under NDA) if you'd like.
