P: PS 25 'Can't open .psdc file "the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop'

Community Beginner ,
Apr 09, 2025 Apr 09, 2025

I'm having trouble accessing a cloud file that I just worked on 15 hours ago. It was all created with the latest, updated version of photoshop. I have not changed anything in my system, but I am no longer able to open this file. It's a .psdc file.

I've tried making it available offline only, online only, and downloading it to my desktop.

I've tried opening it in the app, and in the browser directly.

I've tried re-uploading it into the browser from my computer.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled photoshop.

I've updated my entire pc, and yes I've restarted everything in between all of this. I've tried everything I can think of.

I'm able to open all of my other files, except this one.

Here are two errors I'm seeing.

This one directly in the app:

"Couldn't open "[filename].psdc" because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."

And this one in the browser version:

The browser version get's close to opening it, I see the graphics, and then it clears the screen and prompts with this error.  -- "Sorry, we couldn't open your document. (-25040)"

Would gladly take any advice or suggestions here.

Windows OS, Photoshop version 26.5.0

Could you share one of the sample PSDC files with us? Please share the link to the file with me via direct message from my profile.

Thanks!

Hallo,

Datei passiert... Davor hatte ich nie Probleme.

Meine Hardware: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-11900KF @ 3.50GHz 3.50 GHz, 64 GB RAM, Nvidia 3080ti, Win 11.

Ich nutze die neuste Version von Photoshop.

Ich hoffe, dass das Problem gelöst werden kann.

Gruß

Tom

Hey @tomb94506010

It looks like you're saving the file as Photoshop Cloud Document. Does this error happen on specific device or version?

I'm experiencing the same problem. I have a file that was saved as PSDC and now can't open it. I have tried opening it through the link you sent but it is still not opening. Any guidance on this would be most appreciated.

Hi, I had the same issue today, could it be because my file size is too big? I have over 60 images in multiple artboards.

Hi, did you find a solution to this? I've had the exact same thing tonight. Thanks

Hi everyone,

I’m facing an issue with some of my .psdc cloud files. When I try to open them, I get this error message:

"Couldn't open 'filename.psdc' because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."

Here’s my setup and what I’ve tried:

  • I’m using the latest version of Photoshop on both macOS and Windows (Creative Cloud is up to date).

  • I’ve tried opening the file:

    • By double-clicking it from Finder/File Explorer

    • Through File > Open in Photoshop

    • From the Home > Cloud Documents tab inside Photoshop

    • Via photoshop.adobe.com

None of these methods work. The issue only happens with some .psdc files, not all. Other files open just fine.

I’m logged in properly to my Adobe account, Creative Cloud sync is working, and the files appear normally under my Cloud Documents.

Has anyone else experienced this or know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

I managed to fix it by downloading different versions of Photoshop till one worked, which was Photoshop 2024. I believe my file was is also really big (5GB) and too much to handle. I would work with smaller images in the future.

same issue here in the latest days, happened with a .psdc file on creative cloud and as well if i download the file is unstable; maybe could work but then re-opening or editing some part make photoshop generating errors or in the worst case don't even open anymore the file (the error message is relatated to the version of photoshop, not possible as is the latest update available). Let's see if with 26.6 fix this, anyway this kind of bug isn't tolerable from users
