P: Select Subject = Blue Screen of Death 'uncorrectable error'

So after a clean install of Windows 10, all the latest updates and the latest updates for PS 2020, I was hoping this would be fixed, but it's still an issue.

In PS 2019, I open a high res TIFF, and go to: Select -> Select Subject. In about 2 seconds my subject is selected. Perfect.

In PS 2020, I open that same TIFF, Select -> Select Subject... and... waiting... BSOD. Every time. What's worse is it even crashes the BSOD and it just hangs on 0%.

Not sure if it's any further help but the TIFF I have open has a resolution of 8280x6208 and is 271 MB in size.

The exact same process in PS 2019 has no issues whatsoever.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I noticed Nick has set his Photoshop settings to use 90% of his computer's memory. Due to multiple factors, I'm still using CS3 which Adobe recommends we only allot about 70% or so to Photoshop. Could Nick be getting the blue screen of death because giving PS 90% is too much - and that may be taking away what his computer needs to keep running - thus it shuts itself down? Just a thought ... sorry for interfering if I'm way off base.

@bettie_robertson It's a good spot Bettie but lowering this seemingly made no difference, plus my 2017 config is identical and also set at 90% and that doesnt have an issue with select subject at all. If this does turn out to be the cause then there but be something seriously wrong with 2020's memory usage.

nick@atozmedia.com West While Hannah is investigating with engineering, I have seen some errors with the GPU between versions solved by restoring prefs. If you reset your prefs by moving the Photoshop Settings folder out using these instructions, does it work correctly? https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

Would be a good quick test to see if there's just something hanging around in prefs that's the cause.

@JeffreyTranberry it did it from a completely clean install even with no previos version of PS installed. I'm afraid I wont be giving it another try though Jeffrey, I need this machine up and running for work and I can't afford to go through that again, the last BSOD 'select subject' caused completely locked up, it actually crashed the crash screen. I lost 3 days trying to get back into Windows after that. I'm now back in 2019 and I won't be installing 2020 any time soon. Appreciate the suggestions though.

This has been going on ever since PS 2023 with every version since release. It happens randomly but seems to ONLY happen in Photoshop when opening any type of image small or large. It does not happen everytime to the same file, it's just random. Blue screen of death with a few seconds able to read the error then restarts. NVLDDMKM.SYS

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I have been dealing with this will Dell for over a month now and no resolution, drivers uninstalled, reinstalled updated. Nvidia graphics driver updated multiple versions since. This Photoshop has been the absolute worst experience. Anyone else having this issue?

Hey everyone.

Blue screens reflect low level failures, often hardware. Your system should be reinstalled and inspected for faulty hardware, ie loose cards, campatibility with current OS software, etc.

That doesn't make sense though, I can run PS 2022 perfectly fine with the same files zero BSOD, it's PS 2023 that is causing it.
