Hi,

I'm seeing this only after the move tool is selected (which is rather common). I've logged a bug for this. Thanks for the report!

I just checked that is the case after move tool, but it didn't do that before the update.

Yes, unfortunately, this is a bug that crept in at the very last minute.  We are currently working on a fix.  If you avoid the Move tool (V), then the problem shouldn't happen.

Thanks,
David

Pete, there is an interesting bug you should have a look at concerning this and 10.12.4

I'll dub it the  V bug. Tapping the Move shortcut v and then tapping another tool like the Lasso shortcut--L, causes the Polygonal Lasso tool to default to the regular Lasso Tool.

The same goes for the Wand--w  and the Crop--c Tool.

It seems the V shortcut triggers this behavior in 2017.1.0

This bug cannot be duplicated in Photoshop CC 2015.5.2

Details here: OSX

And odd enough, even one for Windows 10

I have suggested a workaround if you still want to use the V shortcut.

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2300732  Post#5

Simply use Edit > Toolbar to position the tools you need into the top position making it the default.
You can look at the Lasso tool example to understand the idea.

Then the V shortcut will be less of a problem.

After updating to Photoshop CC 2017.1.0, I'm encountering an issue when switching between tools using keyboard shortcuts.  Instead of Photoshop remembering my previously selected tool (e.g. pencil tool), switching back will give me the default tool for a given shortcut key (brush instead of pencil).

How to reproduce this issue:

Start out by drawing with the pencil tool, press "v" to switch to the move tool, and then press "b" again to switch back to the pencil tool. I get the brush tool instead of getting my previously-selected pencil tool.  Same thing happens if you select the Elliptical Marquee Tool, then press "v" to switch to the move tool, then press "m" to switch back to the Elliptical Marquee Tool -- you get the default Rectangular Marquee tool instead.  This didn't happen for me in the previous version of Photoshop, and it's making it difficult to take advantage of shortcut keys.

Seems similar to this issue from 2015:

Repro:
1.) Switch e.g. Rectangular Marquee Tool to Elliptical by pressing "SHIFT + M"
2.) Now select Move Tool pressing "V"
3.) Then select again Marquee Tool by "M"

Marquee Tool is now reset to default Rectangular.

This behaviour is the same on all other subtools if you switch to Move Tool by "V" before.
Do it by mouse click and everything works as expected.

This is major for me as well as I use the pencil tool extensively for pixel art. Switching selection tools can be manageable to a certain degree, but drawing tools are essential to work smoothly. If you want a suggestion, as a quick fix for now use the Edit/Tool customisation menu and drag the pencil tool on top of the hierarchy of the drawing tools. By doing so when the bug occurs at least you'll have the pencil tool being selected instead of the brush tool.

When selecting the direct selection tool, the selection usually sticks, even though you select another tool. But with latest update the tool resets everytime you quick jump to the tool using "A".

Very basic and frustrating bug 🙂
