P: Photoshop 23.0 - cannot open TIF files, generated in other programs

Guide ,
Oct 27, 2021 Oct 27, 2021

Copy link to clipboard

Copied

Starting from version 22.5.2 Photoshop stopped opening some tif files. The issue is related to a previously discovered vulnerability, the escalation of which, under certain conditions, may lead to arbitrary code execution - Adobe Security Bulletin.

Important: The problem is not with Photoshop, but with third-party software developers who do not keep track of current TIF specifications

A temporary solution to the problem is to convert files in third-party editors that completely update the structure of TIF files (for example, xnView, ImageMagik, etc.); such files can also be converted using the Camera Raw plug-in (via Bridge).

We all hope that Adobe can solve this problem and find a way to bring third-party files to modern standard. But I recommend that you independently contact the developers of programs whose files Photoshop cannot open. Notify them of the problem, recommend to contact @J453 using this community. Jeffrey can provide technical information to developers to solve this problem.

If you're still having trouble with TIFFs created/saved by software that's still being developed, please share the following information with them:

Photoshop’s TIFF parser had a buffer overrun security vulnerability in its synthesized calculation of the Image File Directory entry RowsPerStrip (278).

The fix for that was to reject TIFF files that did not provide the required RowsPerStrip (278) entry. Under the rationale that this IFD entry is required, as per the TIFF specification.

This change was originally made to reject Tiff files that lacked an attribute which could pose a security risk. Engineering is working on a change to amend that behavior to calculate the missing attribute when not provided, but only under the constraint that the calculation can be made with fidelity and not cause the security vulnerability.

For now, you can install the prior version to open tiffs from a trusted source. Install previous versions of your Creative Cloud apps

I couldn't open them in CC 2022, but could in CS6 EXTENDED.

Then I could preview them in Bridge CS6 and Bridge version 12.

Thanks for the information.

Just a couple of days ago, I opened them in CC 22 (and I can open them now if I restore the system from a backup - most likely this is due to the fact that CC 22 was updated with preservation of the settings from previous versions (at least from CC 19)).
Now I've done a clean install of CC 22 and they won't open either 😞

They can be opened in CC 2022 after unlocking background & locking it back and resaving a file in CS6.

What application were these saved in that caused them not to open in Photoshop?

I've asked engineering to take a look. Please let us know what application saved these files such that they won't open anymore.

Photoshop update MAC 22.5.2 stopped opening all my tiff files! It worked fine before I upgraded. The error message is

Could not open “Ditch digger QA140024.tiff” because of a problem parsing the TIFF file.

How do I reload an oder version of photoshop before 22.5.2?

I posted same issue for MAC and PS 22.5.2

Application is RAW Photo Processor 64 TIFF files, boith LAB and BetaRGB TIFFS. I have to run old TIFF files through GIMP or Olympus Workspace and resave to get PS to read them. It all worked before upgrade to MAC 22.5.2. I am not upgrading to PS 23 because I do not need the new features and PS already used way too much RAM to run. It is a real memory hog!

Good morning, since yesterday when I installed the new version of PS 2022, it has not been able to open 32-bit .tiff files and some 16-bit files cannot open them when with PS 2021 you do it without problems. Someone can tell me what is the reason for this problem. The error message is the following "COULD NOT BE COMPLIED BECAUSE IT IS NOT THE CORRECT FILE TYPE"
My operating system is Windows 10 64 bits
I appreciate the help.

Hi there,

We're sorry for the trouble. Could you please share some sample files with us which you are unable to open in Photoshop 23.0 version? You can upload them on a One Drive or Creative Cloud and share the downloadable link with us?

Also, you may try reset Photoshop preferences back to defaults and check if that helps. Here's the article for the steps: Adjust preferences in PhotoshopAlso, back up the existing Photoshop preferences if you have any custom brushes, action and workspace: Migrate presets, actions, and settings.

Let us know if that helps.

Thanks,

Mohit

In version 2021, when opening the 32-bit file, I did it with PS. While you were answering me I have seen that entering CAMERA RAW PREFERENCES and modifying in Tiff Administration - automatically open all compatible tiff then effectively the 32bits tiff file opens but in Camera Raw, not in PS.

Hi @carlos1587,

Thanks for sharing the file with us. I was unable to open it too. I have tried a workaround here: Open the tiff file with Photoshop 22.5.1 version and save it > Reopen it with Photoshop 23.0 and it should work for you. I would suggest you do it with only those files which you received from a trusted source.

Thanks,

Mohit

I have the same problem after updating to the 23.0 so not an unique problem. Enclosed a trusted .tif file from national geography instutute including map contour shading that I´m using to create map graphics. This file was opened with no problems with the old version. The new version is unable to open this with "not the right file type" error message.

So the problem from 23 is also in 22.5.2, but wasn't in 22.5.1 to which we are disallowed to make downgrade 😕

Edit: I can't post in this thread. I tried 20 times! I decided to post in other thread to move my post to this one!

Kukurykus... I can use MAC Preview to make a 16bit PNG that PS will read. It's an extra pain, but I can ignore any PS upgrades from now on at least.

Recently updated to Photoshop 23. We can't open TIF-files that has been saved in other programs than photoshop. In our case we use Fotostaions server application Color Factory to resize images to our clients. We get feedback from them that the files they recieve no longer can be opened by Photoshop.
Any feedback or workaraounds is appreciated.

I have found that the problem is that newer versions of PS do not support certain GPUs. Specifically, it is camera RAW that causes this error and that is why even if we uninstall the latest version of PS to return to the previous one, we will have the same problem. The solution I found is to enter the Camera RAW preference, and in File Management enable the option "automatically open all compatible tiff". In this way, the 32-bit or 16-bit tiff that PS cannot open can be opened by camera raw. I hope it helps you

I don't believe the gpu or camera raw is the problem, but rather it has something to do with the  update in 22.5.2  and 23.0 has that as well.

All the tif files that have been posted so far, at least on my end, open in photoshop 22.5.1 and older, while 22.5.2 with the security update won't open the files and 23.0 won't open the files either.

While you can use camera taw to open the offending tif files, if any of the files have layers you lose those.

My Photoshop CC is version 23.0.0, updated today, and suddenly I can't open TIFFs I was able to open before. I can open them in Windows Photo Viewer. 8 bit, captured as .tif in 2018 with Capture One 9 Macintosh. I can see the thumbnail preview in Bridge, but when I click on them there or try o open from Photoshop I get the message "Could not complete your request because it is not the right type of document." No problems with .jpg files. Is it the update? Doesn't work with Open As TIFF either. I am using Windows 10.

I'm having the same problem too.  TIFF files that opened just fine in Adobe five days ago before the update will no longer open.  They are from a trusted source and uncorrupted.  I also do not see a way to revert back to Photoshop 22.5.1.  I can install Photoshop 22.5.2, but it has the same problem.
