Photoshop default saving as JPEG 2000 not JPEG

New Here ,
Mar 12, 2025 Mar 12, 2025

Hello,

When I use "save as" its defaults to saving as JPEG 2000 and I have to manuelly click the drop down and select JPEG every time. Which is frustrating. I have seen previous posts about this with a fix but it no longer works.

File handeling - legacy, 8 bit channel, flat layers etc doesnt seem to fix the problem. Photoshop Version 26.4.1 - laptop Apple Mac Max M4

Cheers for any help in advance.

Hey @StephenFisherPhoto

Hope you are doing well !

The issue is most likely due to Photoshop's updated "Save As" behavious. Try these solutions.

1) Use "Save a copy" - Instead of "Save As", go to File > Save a Copy, which will allow you to select JPEG as the default format.

2) Enable Legacy "Save As" - Go to Preferences > File Handling , check Enable Legacy Save As, and restart Photoshop.

3) Reset Preferences - If the issue persists, reset Photoshop preferences by holding Option + Command + Shift when launching the app.

Let me know if it helps!

I agree with @Astonished_motivation5639 – you most likely have the source file at 16 BPC, while JPEG only supports 8 BPC.

Rehashing a recent post:

You can output a JPEG by:

1) File > Export As [32/16/8 BPC input for 8 BPC output]

2) Save a Copy using File > Save As ticking the a Copy checkbox or enable Legacy Save As in your File Handling preferences/settings [16/8 BPC input for 8 BPC output]

3) File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy) [16/8 BPC input for 8 BPC output]

4) Make the file, or a duplicate of the file conform to the JPEG specification, i.e., flattened with no layers, no alpha channels and only 8 BPC so that JPEG is available for File > Save As (if Legacy Save As isn't enabled).

5) Adobe Generator/Generate Image Assets
