Photoshop freezing at 99% when saving multi-layer files to PSD

I did look at the previous similar topic and I did go to file handling and change "recent file list" to 5 from 20. I also went to Edit, Purge, purge all ...

 

If I merge all layers then save PSD it will save in a fraction of a second. If I attempt to save with multiple layers (even just as few as 3) it will freeze at 99%.  I opened a different file and created just a couple of dupicate layers and attempted to save as PSD. It did the same thing, freezing at 99%. 

 

I am running a newer I9 system with 64 gig of RAM and multiple terabytes of disk space available.

First of all, are you saving directly to an external drive? If you are, save to local disk and copy the saved file over.

Other than that, "If I merge all layers then save PSD it will save in a fraction of a second" points to a problem with layer compositing. Try to uncheck these:
