Photoshop Greedy with Memory

It seems like photoshop's performance and efficiency has tanked after the 24.5 or 24.6 update. I'm currently using 24.7 and still having problems. 

I am a professional digital artist and I regularly work on pretty hefty files (lots of layers, clipping masks, some text, layer styles, brushes with directional properties, etc.) and for most of the last 7 years photoshop has been able to do the job on my computer without much fuss. However, recently it has started to lag after any significant amount of time working on a hefty file. I noticed that in fact my whole computer would lag, and upon checking task manager, that photoshop was using almost all available memory. In the two previous versions photoshop would just crash, whereas now it just lags out my computer to the point of being unusable until I quit the program and then end task in task manager (rather than waiting the weirdly long amount of time it takes for the tasks to truly end on their own).

I would just like to continue working as I have been without issue. I'm not sure if it's some new preference that was added, a bug in the new versions, or if these new versions are coinciding with my RAM cards deciding to die on their own (I hope that's not the case). In any case, I would appreciate any help.

I'm sure anyone willing to help will need me to post some text files or system files, so just let me know what you need and I'll try and figure out how to do it.

This is probably unrelated to memory usage. Photoshop is supposed to use all available memory - in fact, it will usually need a whole lot more than even that, which is why it uses the scratch disk to write all that working data to disk.

As long as you have enough scratch disk space, Photoshop will neither crash nor have any other major problems with low memory. Low memory is normal. It uses the scratch disk for the heavy lifting, with RAM dynamically reallocating the most recent data, like a cache.

Memory is supposed to be used. Free memory is wasted memory.

Most often, problems like this are GPU-related, a buggy driver or other problems. We've also seen some system-related issues (mostly on Ryzen systems, some of them resolved with a BIOS update).

Complete System Info might give a clue. Engineering staff might have further questions if we're not getting any further.

Hi @KCSteven one thing I noticed is while you have the E drive as a scratch disk available, it appears to be listed secondary to your C: drive. That means your C drive would fill up first, then switch to the much large E.

Go to Scratch Disk settings and make the E drive listed first and honestly, I'd turn off the C drive as an option. See if that improves the lag over time.

Indeed. 60 GB free on the C drive, that's not a lot. I usually say that 500 GB should be considered minimum. In a pinch, you might get away with 250, as long as you don't push it.

Thanks for looking over all of that! I'll try it with the C: scratch disk diabled and see how that works for a while. And really? 500gb minimum? That feels very steep just for one program. I guess I'll have to look into getting another SSD to just be my photoshop scratch disk drive.

It's not Photoshop - it's advanced raster image editing. It eats memory.

Each history state potentially adds the full uncompressed file size - for each open document. And yes, there's some overhead, mainly for smart objects.

A simple app that only handles a flat 8 bit jpeg with 1 history state might not need so much.

I want to also add, because this seems to have improved performance overall for me:

I went into Preferences > Performance > Advanced Settings (underneath the checkbox for Use Graphics Processor)
from there I basically turned off as much as I could without losing any functions that are necessary in my workflow. I only have GPU Compositing checked on right now and Photoshop, as well as my whole computer, have been running more smoothly, like how I was used to.
