Photoshop is ridiculously unperformant with large files that have a few layers

Filing this as a bug because currently Photoshop is unbelievably laggy in this scenario, when historically (especially in pre-cloud days) it used to perform much better.

I'm on Windows 11 Pro, on a laptop with an i7 processor, 32gb memory and discrete graphics card, my disk is less than half-full and I've set PS to use 80% of available RAM. PS version is 25.11.0 20240716.r.706 b326a7d x64.

Editing a 916mb, 10157 x 15000 px file with 19 layers, PS is slow to respond with basic tasks like moving around the file at a high zoom level and transforming layers. Sometimes when using the hand tool to move around, colored artifacts appear on parts of the file. The tool keyboard shortcuts don't always work on first keypress, or they seem to work but then don't (e.g. with clone selected, pressing move tool shortcut shows the cursor changing to move tool, only to revert on first click).

This is particularly disappointing because I've been using PS to create large-scale photomontages for many years now, and 10 years ago, with CS6 (iirc) and a laptop with less than half the memory of this one it worked much better. Some of the photomontages I did back in the day had something like 80 layers. I mainly chose to use PS because it performed well with this type of work, unlike e.g. Gimp.

Could you please dedicate some effort to fixing performance. I have no need for things like generative AI tools. I just want a professional photo editing program with a variety of tools to efficiently select, cut, paste, paint and transform layers, that isn't put to shame by its 12 year old predecessor.

Thanks,

Isabel.

I'm routinely working with similar sized files and Photoshop is consistently instant and snappy.

Is this a dual GPU laptop? How much free disk space do you have for the PS scratch disk? When people see deteriorating performance over time and successive versions, it's usually because hardware requirements increase, particularly the GPU. Or their scratch disk space is slowly disappearing as things accumulate in the user account.

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't get notified of your comment!

It is a dual GPU laptop, with both an Intel card and an NVIDIA one. They're both working correctly.

The PS scratch disk has 182.79GB free, which should be enough?

>> Editing a 916mb, 10157 x 15000 px file with 19 layers<< Is this 300ppi or 72ppi?

The NVIDIA Quadro P1000 is a good GPU, but ensure that your system is not switching between the NVIDIA GPU and the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630, as this could lead to performance bottlenecks. Set Photoshop's performance settings to exclusively use the NVIDIA Quadro P1000.

To optimize performance in Photoshop:

Purge Cache: Go to Edit > Purge > All to clear Photoshop's cache, freeing up memory and potentially improving performance.

Adjust Cache Levels: In Photoshop's Performance settings, adjust the Cache Levels. Setting it higher (like 4 or 6) can improve performance with larger files, though it may increase initial load times.

Regarding memory usage, while Photoshop using 80% of available memory is generally good, it can cause slowdowns if the remaining memory is insufficient for other system processes, especially with large files. Photoshop uses scratch disks to store temporary files when it runs out of RAM.

Laptop vs. Desktop Performance: I just offer this as persepctive... If Photoshop needs to use a scratch disk, keep in mind that laptop hard drives are generally slower than desktop hard drives. Laptops typically have slower RPMs (Revolutions Per Minute) and use 2.5-inch drives compared to the 3.5-inch drives in desktops. The smaller size and slower speed can contribute to reduced performance due to smaller platters and lower data density.

With this information we might be able to help make perfromance better or at least set expectations.

My files are always 300ppi; I need them to have print quality.

> Set Photoshop's performance settings to exclusively use the NVIDIA Quadro P1000.

I assume this means checking "Use Graphics Processor" in the performance preferences? If so, that's how I have it set up already. Or is there something else I'm missing?

Cache levels are set to 6.

Thanks for the tip on purging cache, I'll try that next time things get really laggy!

The problem with the two GPUs is that they conflict. Disable the Intel UHD 630 completely, as per the instructions in section 6 & 7 here:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card.html

Generally, a word of caution regarding laptops: hardware, drivers and operating system are usually heavily modified by the laptop manufacturer. This is their way to put their own stamp on the product. But all these extra layers tend to get in the way and just cause problems for more advanced applications like Photoshop.

Go through the list of installed software and get rid of everything you don't need. That's probably quite a lot. Just as an example, most laptops today are sold with a whole suite of third-party antivirus and antimalware products. You don't need it! Windows is well protected on its own. Norton, in particular, is notorious for taking over the whole machine and causing no end of problems for other applications.

Open the Startup list and disable as much as possible if you can't uninstall it. It will still work when called, but it doesn't necessarily need to run all the time.

In short - clean up.

One more thing: there's no physical way to cool a laptop efficiently. There's just too many components crammed into an impossibly tight space. So what happens is that components are throttled down to well below nominal speed ratings, to prevent overheating. A laptop will never be as fast as a similarly speced well ventilated desktop machine.
