Photoshop Workspace Unstable

Frequently when I re-open Photoshop the history panel and the Adjustments panel are out of place. All my panels except the main image window are supposed to reside on my secondary monitor (the saved workspace). I am on MacOS Monterey 12.6 using a Mac Studio M1 Ultra (2022) and my Photoshop version is 24.4.1. The displays are set-up as an integrated desktop - menus and cursor can move around between them.

Let's make sure we're in a default state and there are no stale settings somewhere:

Does it work correctly?

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

Hi @MarkDS does this happen after your Mac goes to sleep? This was an older noted issue with Mac Monterey not recognizing a secondary monitor fast enough when waking a Mac from sleep or locked screen.

Interestingly, on my set-up, the Mac wakes up and recognizes the secondary display first and then the primary display, so I don't think in my case this is the source of the problem.

Did you replace the prefs and made sure they were not just reset? Want to make sure we know where we are with your issue.

Hi Cory, firstly, sorry I'm replying 4 days late on these enquiries, but all the Adobe Community emails, I just discovered a few minutes ago, were on my Spam folder. I declared them not Spam and since then they seem to be coming into the Inbox. On the subject of Preferences - no - I have not touched them. I have perhaps groundless fears with this. Everything else works well (apart from the application bug about saving big files I raised in another bug report) so I am fearful of dislodging settings that may have resolved previous issues, of which there were plenty when I made the transition to the new Mac Studio. I'd appreciate some hand-holding on what I shall need to rebuild after doing this. I know it's the first thing often recommended - sort of like doctors prescribing broad-spectrum anti-biotics, so I'd appreciate some insight into why trashing and rebuilding prefs could resolve this issue before I steam ahead into the unknown. Thanks.

@MarkDS if you follow the steps in the link, you are not trashing anything, just moving to the desktop, restarting Ps so it rebuilds clean prefs, then trying your workflow to see if that solves the issue. It is very comon for many issues in Ps to be releated to corrupt prefs. How or why this happens, that is for others at a much higher pay grade to me to explain, we just know in the computer world it happens.

If this process does NOT solve the issue, then you can move your original prefs folder back in and you are back to the way it was, nothing is lost.

If Ps now works correctly after doing this process, then we know somewhere in the prefs folder(s) there is a bad file and you can try moving in a few at a time and restarting Ps to try to determine which one or group it could be.

This is really the only way to make sure we are not runing in circles to solve some issue because we can eliminate the most basic types.

I have been experiencing the same issue for months on the same setup except I have the M1 Max. Every single time my screen goes to sleep ... the Photoshop interface is not where I left it when I wake it up. The main Photoshop window is about half-way down the primary display. My tools reside on my secondary screen, but are moved to the primary. I am able to quickly put things back by resetting the workspace, but I have to double-click the Photoshop window to make it re-center on the screen. My displays inlcude a new Studio Display (primary), a Thunderbolt display (secondary) and an iMac 27 (is a separate desktop, but serves as a third display controlled via Extended Display). Latest versions of Monterey and Photoshop installed. I do not recall what version this began ... but it was not a problem until it was. I have read these boards previously and done all of the prescribed solutions people posted. Nothing worked. I even went as far as to completely wipe the computer and start with a fresh install (several months ago) of everything ... and it immediately began doing it. I have just learned to live with it at this point ... doesn't make it any less annoying tho.

Hi Jasander, the one thing I would add about this problem, and you can advise whether you are having the same experience, is that it isn't persistent, which is the worst possible place to be for purposes of diagnosis, because sometimes it works correctly and sometimes it doesn't. Right now, on my system, since I upgraded Photoshop from the previous dot-release to 24.5, it is opening correctly I would say 4 times out of 5, but on the 1 time out of 5 the history panel turns up hidden behind the main window on the primary display rather than the secondary.

I have done further homework on the idea suggested here of trshing and re-installing the Preferences folder, as a result of which I have opted not to do that for the time being, because there is a risk that it could have unwelcome side-effects one would prefer to avoid, there being a cost-benefit question about whether it is even analytically useful. Maybe as Cory suggests it could be, but I am assuming from between the lines of what you say that you did try and it didn't help, which I assume means that nothing in the preferences folder affects this issue.

I think at this point it would be good if someone who knows the algorithms under the hood that determine the placement of the workspace items review this problem to know where the disconnects may be that cause the issue and then have those analyzed by the relevant application engineers at both Adobe and Apple Computer. They may find a bug by careful analysis. But the instability of the issue itself (on and off), as I suggested, is often a major nuisance in respect of diagnostics.

Hi Mark. My experience 100% consistent and I work in Photoshop almost every day. Even if I'm sitting in front of the screen, it goes to sleep and I immediately wake it up ... everything has moved. I tried all of the proposed solutions, inlcuding the Preferences folder idea. Nothing worked and why I thought maybe something was corrupt in my OS and wiped it. When I set up Photoshop, I even recreated my workspace from scratch. Only imported my Actions. I'm also not convinced this is solely an Adobe issue. I have other random Photoshop bugs that seem to be related to the way it works with graphics hardware. Either way, this has specific issue has been happening for close to a year now or longer. Again ... have just learned to live with it.

I too am not convinced it is solely an Adobe issue. Problems often arise due to some obscure incompatibilities between operating system versions and other application versions. One way or another it should be looked into by boith companies.
