Unable to paste text on a path in photoshop

Trying to paste text from word into PS26.3.0 on a circular path. The text tool won't change to a I and makes a new text layer instead, no matter how long you hover. Text pastes ok without pasting onto a path. Anyone got any ideas (apart from going back to CS6 which seems to be my favorite working bug free version!) gratefully accepted, thanks in advance!

Update: it works if you copy and save the initial path and paste the text then.

I'm not seeing the same behavior on my end. My guess is there is some sort of non-default setting of some sort interfering here. A screen shot when the behavior occurs may help. One thing that is likely to fix it would be resetting the preferences to return you to defaults. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#reset-preferences

To be clear, you are not seeing ether tool icon? Text on a path. Text inside a shape or enclosed path?
I am trying to think of conditions that might cause that, but it sounds broken to me. As you can see, mine is working and I am also use 26.3 and the same Windows version. If you have not taken Brett's advice and reset Preferences, which is always a pain, you could try resetting All Tools which would be less disruptive.
