70s montage movie poster effect

Hey there,

I'm trying to make one of those paintend 1970s montage movie posters.

Can anyone help me with how they would do that? I've found a couple of turorials that are almost there, but not quite!

What is the material you want to edit thusly? Please post examples. 

How do the tutorials fall short of your expectations? With regard to the painterly effects, the composition, the typography, …? 

What is the actual use case – fun, professional purposes, printing, …?
