Is it legal to install a pirated version of Adobe Photoshop 5.5 on your Laptop? I asked because this version is more than 20 years old.

Why would you expect Adobe to endorse pirated copies of their software?

Also note these items often install malware.

That can not be legal.

But I am curious how that is supposed to work – which current OS version would run that application?

Or do you also run an emulator of an obsolet OS version?
