P: Program error when trying to use clone stamp tool

Problem started 2 days ago. Only when attempting to use the Clone Stamp tool. Other tools seem OK. I re-installed Photoshop and reset the tool. No benefit. No changes to hardware or software on PC. Error text "Could not complete your request because of a program error". Also cannot dismiss error message. Have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to access Task Manager to close Photoshop.

Thanks for reaching out. We're sorry to hear about the program error you get while using the Clone Stamp tool in Photoshop 23.4.1.

Could you please share the version of Windows on your computer?

Are you seeing this issue after any recent update? Is it happening with only the Clone Stamp tool or other tools? 

Please go to Edit > Preferences > Performance section and uncheck the option "Use Graphics Processor." Restart your Adobe Photoshop and see whether it helps. If the issue persists, check out the other solutions.

Try to reset the tools followed by Photoshop preferences. 
Steps to reset the Tools and Preferences: To reset all the tools at once, right-click on the icon of whatever tool is currently selected in the Tool Options, select "Reset All Tools," and then click "OK." When you use the Reset All Tools option, it will reset all the tool selections in the Tools bar to their defaults.
You may try to reset Photoshop preferences back to defaults and check if that helps.

Please try to disable the option to "Use Graphics Procesor" from Photoshop by going to Preferences, then Performance. Once done, quit & relaunch Photoshop to check if that helps.

If you're unable to access Preferences and PhotoShop crashes before that, please go to the location C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2021. Then rename the Sniffer.exe to Old.Sniffer.exe and try launching Photohsop again.

If the issue persists, you can try to reset the preferences of Photoshop using the steps described here:

Please backup your settings before resetting the preferences. You can check:

Migrate presets, actions, and settings (adobe.com)

Another try it to turning on the option »Deactivate Native Canvas« (Photoshop > Preferences > Technology Previews) and restarting Photoshop.

Which operating system do you use?

Which version of Photoshop do you use?

Please post the exact version not only phrases like "recent", "latest" and so on.

Is your system up-to-date? Check if there any patches and updates are available, especially for the graphic driver.

Hello, since updating mine to 23.4.1 2 days ago, I can't use the clone tool, the healing brush or liquify.  When trying any of these tools I get the error the first user mentioned, and clicking on ok doesn nothing.  It basically renders my photoshop useless, I have to force quit through task manager and reopen.

I suggest to reset the preferences, i used to use all apps on two PC's.

• Quit Photoshop.

• Hold down the following keyboard shortcut and launch Photoshop:

  macOS: command + option + shift

  Windows: ctrl + alt + shift

• Open Photoshop.

• Click Yes in the dialog that asks "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"

I am having the same issue with Photoshop, and none of the trouble shooting tips worked or made any difference. I can't use the clone stamp, when the clone stamp is selected and I click to select the area to clone, I get the error message and the program has to be forced closed.

Photoshop 23.4.1 - Operating system is Windows 10 Pro. As for what we have tried, I did everything in your previous post, reset preferences, turned off graphic processor, etc. Problem started this week, not sure if an update happened or not.

Yes.  This specifically has to do with the update to this version.  It was fine until I did the update.  There is a bug with 23.4.1 2

yeah, so much for help, i did that when asked and no one has bothered to reply. the new update has totally screwed with photoshop, it freezes, locks, wont scroll correctly, and when i rolled back the same thing is not happening, and yes i have updated my drivers, and done the GPU check from adobe. something is seriously wrong with the latest update.

Just FYI: I uninstalled and rolled back one version and everything is good.  Hopefully adobe will put out a fix
