Hi there

i'm working on a collage of but need to cutout an unsharp but very detailed subject (a nettle...) to put in the background.
photoshop selection and mask tools all fail on the details, cutout by hand makes it unrealistic.

Anyone any experience with this and some tips for me.

Big thanks in advance

Can you share a screenshot of what you are trying to select?

Have you tried starting with a selection then modifying using Select and Mask to soften or (going old school) painting the selection in Quick Mask using a soft brush?

Thanks, my problem is that the soft edges need to be transparant to show a bit of the new background. If i use a soft brush of a partly transerent brush i remove not only the original background partly but also the blurry ledges of the leaves...
I'll try the selection with channels as @PECourtejoie suggested.
I'm afraid i need to shoot the nettles with backgrounds simmilar to the new backgrounds... alot of extra work though...

A trick is to select the edges of your selection. Select>modify>edges or border (I'm not in front of Ps right now) then target the background, copy, then paste in a new layer on top of your object, change the blending mode to color, IIRC...

The left one should be easily selectable with the channels, the right one would be more time consuming...

I did not think it would have been that blurry!

Hi, waiting for an image as well...

Sometimes it is best to select the background, then invert.

I usually try to get the best selection, then paint details in Quickmask, if blending modes or Select and Mask did not help totally.
