Are you using Windows or Mac?

Are you attempting top open these files from File Explorer/Finder or Bridge?  Try right clicking and choosing Open With

If using Bridge, can you simply double click?

Are these files from the same camera?  CR2 files differ according to the camera, and new cameras need ACR to be updated.

Bridge has a File Associations tab.
