Any suggestions for cutting out an object from bg that has a very similar texture, color and value?

Hi everybody. Im trying to do some advanced photoshop techniques and am having difficulty cutting out objects like the one below. The best result I can get is seen below using the select and mask feature. Does anyone have any tips to make this selection (of the ferns not the water) a little more accurate?  Thanks heaps, Tom

For the most difficult selections, this, and variations of this, are still my go-to method:

Thanks for your link  S Gans.  I tried this method first and unfortuenntly its impossible  due to the same color and values of the subject and background.  This picture might help illustrate what I mean. No contrast on R B or G

Edit: I've yeilded a slightly better result selecting only the stems of the fern with the pologonal tool and uping the radius. Still not great though. Im convinced only way to get it good would be to spend hours on it. If anyone has a tip tho I'd love to know! 🙂
