Anyone is aware of library or tool who already implemented read/write/edit functionality for PSD files? I need to be able crop/rotate PSD files preserving all info (layers etc) and save it back to PSD and for Photoshop to be able to open the result correctly. I was looking on the web but all command line tools that claim to do that generating resulting PSD that Photoshop or Photoshop CS can not open. ;(
I assume since so many using toolkit, someone must have written its already.

Thank you for your help.

Maybe if you apply for the information and say you want to use it to
write this kind of tool, then Adobe don't grant permission. It's just
a thought, not inside knowledge. Also, maybe the format includes some
things that are not documented; perhaps the format documentation is
enough to read all image information from PSD files, but not enough to
write a new one that is valid. It also may be that the tools you
found are based on very old format information, not up to date with
current versions of Photoshop.

Adobe do have something called the "Graphics Server" which might be
able to do this.

Also, for lower volumes, you could use Photoshop automation to do your
task.

I was exchanging emails with Adobe manager about it. He said that you should ask around for the library or tool so I dont see them being conspirative about it.
In general, if they concerned about format why not distribute binary library. I bet most of the developers dont care about internals of PSD format. Just a wish ;/

Thank you for reply.

Find a library the can work with Tiff files. It's my understanding that psd
format is essentially Tiff with some custom/extended tags.

You can also check in with some of the freeware and open source authors that
have psd compatability and see if they can give you what you need or point you
in the right direction.

No, there is no similarity. Also, TIFF is better documented and more extensible.
