Auto-Select unchecking every time I press CTRL

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with selection and deselection. Every time I go to deselect layers and press CTRL, auto-select turns off (and when I release it, it comes back on). I used to be able to press CTRL and click outside of the canvas and it would deselect anything, certainly when I have more than one layer selected. Now that doesn't work anymore, and I just got the check + uncheck thing happening. If I press CTRL click and then lift off of CTRL, it'll just move & drag the selected layer (that I was trying to unselect).

I don't think I'm insane in the sense that I used to click outside the canvas to deselect. Those hot keys are like second nature at this point.

TIA

Hi @ElissaE its been my experience that on Windows holding CTRL while using the Move tool has always toggled the "Auto select" option above. I even went back and tested on my copy of CC2020 and it did indeed act the same.

That being said - using CTRL with any other tool besides the Move tool to temporarily change to the Move tool still works as expected as well, I can auto select layers without issue.

The difference is if you already have the Move tool selected you do not need to use CTRL.

If I Shift + CTRL+S to Save As, I get the same problem. I can't save, and it's only togging the Auto-Select button. Again, this is something I've not personally experienced in many previous versions (aka I don't know when this started exactly, but it was recently)

Hi @ElissaE try going to preferences/File Handling and check/enable "Use Legacy Save As". Relaunch PS and try again.

It's not just the save or the move tool. It's anytime I have to use the CNTL key. For example I try to CNTL + J to duplicate layers, I have the same issue. I'm not able to duplicate, it just checks and unchecks auto-select. And yes, I've double checked to make sure the layer is selected, visible, not locked, etc.

I really did not used to have these issues with the control key.

@ElissaE sounds like you need a preference reset - none of this is normal behavior.

The only other option I consider is are you using a US English Keyboard and the same language install of Photoshop or are you using a different language install of PS where the key mapping is off...
