Better detail, How can I select fine detail?

see photo of eagle and note the the sky is showing through and that is not what I want.  Can you explain the best way to get this cleaned up.

Create a mask from your selection then use Select and Mask to adjust the edges and "Decontaminate Colors" to remove fringing:
