Brush stroke not appearing on a Layer Mask!

Hey there!  I was trying to replicate a blend effect as shown over here - [video link removed] . But when i duplicate the layer, rasterise it and everything and when im about to use my brush, nothing happens. No sign of it on the layer mask too, here are some screenshots.

They are painting with black on white layer mask while you are painting with white on a white layer mask. Change your swatch color to solid black.
