I use Windows. It does not show me what I'm adding or subtracting when using the brush tool. This happened when Photoshop was automatically updated to 25.7. It worked wonderfully prior.

Can you tell us how you are adding and subtracting with the Brush tool?
Select and Mask
Quick Mask
Painting in a channel
Something else
One possibility is that your Brush tool is set to a Blending Mode other than Normal. If you don't see it, share a screenshot of your options bar for the Brush tool.
