When I convert a Raw file to B&W in PS (or in Lighroom and then open it in PS), I'm espected to have Monocrome in the channel box, which doesn't happen. The 3 color channels show up separately and if I combine them, that is only "real" in a sense, as they are saved separately again.

So my inquiry is around how to create a real monocrome channel in PS. Thx

Image > Mode > Grayscale however - be aware that many applications do not handle single channel grayscale well and may display differently.

That's right. Grayscale is subject to standard color management just like RGB and a grayscale icc profile is required for correct treatment of the tone curve. The problem is that almost no applications outside Photoshop support this.

So a grayscale file will be treated very unpredictably outside Photoshop. You need to be absolutely sure to pick a grayscale profile that will match the intended output, or the tone curve will be off.

I usually advise against grayscale for this reason. Monochrome RGB is much safer, because RGB has much wider icc support.
