Hello

I am just learning about calculations and alpha channels. I am using it to extract parts of this image and then take it into adobe illustrator.

How do i make the edges smoother?

You have good answer by @Semaphoric If you want to smooth whatever edge in the feature try using Select and Mask workspace which works with layer mask or apply Gaussian Blur filter to channel then "fix" using Levels for example if you overdo.
