Can anyone teach me how to tune such paintings' color ?

I am learning PS, and got a request tune a antique painting to looks newer, like below picture

 

I tried match color/hue and sat/contrast......but not as desired effect. Can give me some tips how to make the original as desired effect (looks newer) ?

Levels or Curves adjustments are the most appropriate tools to "de-Gamma" images and get rid of haze and fog or crunch the grey levels.
