Can't use Paint Bucket tool after exiting 3D workspace mode

I've tried narrowing down the cause and even a temp work around for this error, and have the below boiled down to the simplest way to recreate the problem.

Problem: Anytime I do the below, I later can't use the Paint Bucket tool.

1) Open a new default Photoshop document.

2) Draw a rectangle using the rectangle tool (filled with black).

3) Change to a 3D Workspace using the upper right drop down option.

4) Click on '3D' from the drop-down menu and select 'New Mesh from Layer' then click 'Postcard'.

5) Close Photoshop without saving.

6) Open Photoshop again and open a new default Photoshop document.

7) Click on the Paint Bucket tool.

8) When I move the cursor over the new Photoshop document it shows a circle with a line through it, and if the document is click to try and apply the fill tool to it, it doesn't do anything and does not display any error or messages.

Temp Workaround I use:

1) I press and hold Alt+Control+Shift when starting Photoshop.

2) When prompted to delete the current settings, I click 'Yes'. The new preferences files are recreated as Photoshop starts.

3) The Paint Bucket tool now works again.

This is obviously a huge pain.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated!

Did you have a layer targeted?  What mode was the document in. Perhaps you did not have to reset you preferences.

When I did the steps you outline using  Windows 10 CC 2017.  When I opened Photoshop alter closeing down Photoshop and not saving the 3D postcard.   Photoshop opened in the 3d workspace. I created the new default document and the paint bucket tool worked without problem...

What OS and version of Photoshop are you using?

I cannot replicate any bug but  I suspect this is not a bug but you are using the wrong tool.

This is the 3D Material Drop Tool It appears in the toolbar when in the default Photoshop 3D workspace

This is the paintbucket tool it appears in the same slot when in the default Essential wokspace

You can customise your toolbar in any workspace by going to Edit - Toolbar

I never used the paint bucket tool in 3D mode, but apparently when switching into the 3D workspace it changed the Paint Bucket tool to the 3D one, but when switching back to the default Essentials workspace it remained set to the 3D Paint Bucket and I never noticed that it changed, so you were correct Davescm. Perhaps Adobe will make it so that this doesn't happen in the future. I've seen others run into similar problems like this when switching between workspaces.

Just as an FYI, I included my versions below.

Adobe Photoshop Version: 2017.1.1 20170425.r.252 2017/04/25:23:00:00 CL 1113967  x64

OS: Windows 10 Pro (all updates applied)

Hi

I create my own custom workspaces.

Get everything the way you like it and click New Workspace . Then name it. I set up one for photography, one for 3d and one for video. That way I can quickly switch and know the panels and toolbar are set the way I like them, not the way someone else decided to make them.

Whilst you can change the existing spaces, if you reset them they go back to Photoshop's layout. Resetting your own goes back to the way it was when you created it.

Yes. it's the worspace.

It happened to me as well...

When you enter the 3D mode somehow it automatically changes the workspace.

FIX IS:

Main menu

Click on the heading "Window" between "Help" and "View."

In the dropdown click "Workspace"

In the next dropdown you will note the "3D" workspace is checked off.

So click on one of the other choices according to your need.

I use it for drawing so I've chosen "Painting"

Voila... The normal "Paint Bucket / Gradient" tool is back.

And all is as it should be 🤩.

I just experienced this problem and thought I was losing my mind! Thank you for this "fix" Sarah5E64! Using the Workspace and changing it to Painting instead of Essentials is what worked for me as well!

I have this same problem, and when I click the default essential workspace... and even resetting the essential workspace, both my eyedropper tool and the paint bucket tool are stuck in 3d mode.

I've also unchecked the 3d mode box, as @Sarah5E64 mentioned above, and that didn't fix it either.

I figured out a workaround... if I go into workspaces and I click '3D'... then go back into workspaces and click 'Graphic and Web'... then i go back into workspaces one more time and went back to the 'Essentials' - it finally reverts my paintbucket and dropper tool to 2d mode.  ::)

I just had same problem and found the tools were hidden once I clicked on the "..." at the bottom of the list.
Then I clicked on Edit Toolbar and was able to add the paint bucket and gradient back in to the "G" shortcut. Also did a few other customizations as I'd not been into that space before (despite using PDS for decades).

I just had this happen too.  Switching to painting workspace fixed it.
