I have an old document in both PDF and PDS formats. The paper is dull with age and the script is not necessarily dark. How can I replace the backgroung (paper) with a white background so the script is more legible?

Hey,

When you say 'the paper is dull' are you talking about an actual printed document?

One way would be to use the Curves dialog box.

Select the White Point icon and click on the background paper.

Select the Black Point eyedropper and click on the script. Text tends to be thin, so be careful to click the very tip of the eyedropper inside the text.
