Clipping Mask not visible when applied to group

I'm following along with a YouTube video on creating a gold text effect; In the video, I'm instructed to create my text and add it to its own group, then create a gradient layer above the group and use that to create a clipping mask. In the video, they clip it with no issues. However when I attempt this, if the clipping mask is above the group it does not show up; If I move it into the group it works fine. The issue is I need it above the group to get the same effects later on in the process. I've tried changing the blending mode, but that doesn't work. Why isn't the clipping mask working and how can I fix it?  I attached a snip of how my layers are set up, with the text showing no gradient clipping mask

Hey, @rachel_1803, Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I've tested recreating this here and Photoshop behaved as expected.

Could you share the YouTube tutorial for reference? One of the errors could stem from creating a Black gradient over a black background, which may not help when making fine adjustments.

Thanks!
