On the 2023 Mac update content aware fill no longer allows me to make use of the "scale" or "mirror" options no matter how large or small the sampling area is - apart from when Color adaptation is on "Default". For any other arrangement for the fill settings, it comes up with "could not fill due to an unknown error. The change cannot be applied."

How do you invoque Content Aware fill?

Is it in Ps 24 (Photoshop 2023?)

Did you try to restore your preferences to their default state with the manual method:
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually it lets you keep a copy of the prefs on the desktop that you can use to revert the process.
