Content-Aware fill not working as expected in Photoshop CS6 Windows 10

I am using PS6 on a Windows 10 PC. Recently, I noticed two (possibly related) issues with content-aware fill.

1 - I cannot activate content-aware fill with the shift-F5 keystroke combination; but i can use edit/fill/content aware with no problem.

2 - if i attempt to select a region of the image (say, with the lasso), the computer selects a range of colors as if i had used the magic wand to select.

I *think* I had reset the tool but the situation persists. I would be grateful for suggestions. Thanks.

Hi Bruce,

That shouldn't be happening, let's make it right.

As the tool is not working as expected and you've already tried resetting it.

Could you try resetting the preferences of Photoshop and let us know if it helps? Preferences in Photoshop

Note: Make sure that you back up all your custom presets, brushes and actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences. Migrate presets, actions, and settings

Have you checked on your keyboard shortcut (Edit>Keyboard Shortcut) if the content-aware fill is still on that combination?

Do you have Shift+F5 overridden assigned to an Action?  Also is your CS6 up to date On windows 10? CS6  version 13.0 is very unstable your CS6 should be version 13.0.1.3 Perpetual CS6 or Version 13.1.2 Creative Cloud CS6. CS6 reports Windows 10 As windows 8.

I do not see either of your problems on Windows 10 CS6 version 13.1.2 Creative cloud version.  The first time I use Shift+F5 I do need to use the Pull-down to select Content aware Fill.  I have no problem selecting an area with the lasso tool. The second time I use Shift+F5 the fill Dialog open with content aware fill selected all I need do is press enter or click OK.

Thanks,

i am running "Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0.1 (13.0.1.3 20131024.r.34

2013/10/24:21:00:00) x64", which has been stable as a rock - never crashes,

or anything weird. (i do not have access to CC CS6 since this was a

one-time purchase.)

Shift-F5 has not been overridden or assigned to an action, in fact there

are no actions on this installation.

i appreciate the suggestions, so far no answers. perhaps i should uninstall

and reinstall...

When you started CS6 and pressed and held Ctrl+Alt+Shift did you get the popup dialog do you want to delete your preferences and did you reply yes delete them??? I find it hard to believe CS6 Lasso tool and the shortcut for menu Edit>Fill (Shift+f5) do not work in version 13.0.1.3. Are any third Party Plug-ins installed. Try starting CS6 with the shift key held pressed. Skip loading optional plugins. Edit Keyboard shortcuts check menu Edir>Fill is set to Shift+F5. Is you Keyboard good?

I did not get that message - I got a message asking if I wanted to let PS

make changes to my computer, which does not happen with normal startup. I

have not changed PSCS6 in years, i forget how long it's been running, and

afaik have made no other changes to the software, settings, etc. And, while

there are plugins, i don't think there are any recent changes there either.

starting PS with the shift key depressed has no different effect. I checked

the keyboard shoretcuts, and shift + F5 is still assigned to Edit>Fill.

it is a strange puzzle...

Neither of these changes have made any difference in shift-F5 behavior (or

lack thereof).

Shift-F5 still does not launch the content-aware fill. It did successfully

reset PS to its out-of-the-box condition.

Shift+F5 should  open the fill dialog and the last option you used should be what is shown. It could be content aware or foreground color or any other option

thank you - the situation i meant to describe is that shift-f5 does not

activate any of the "fill" options despite that being the default setting

for that keystroke combination.

in my case shjift-f5 does nothing, while edit>f5 works as expected.

You are right, that content-aware is one of several options in the

dropdown.

in my case, despite having reset all the settings, IF i magic-wand a

range of colors and then shift-F5, the selected color range expands.

i never found a solution, and decided it was not worth pursuing that rabit-trail any longer. i am trying to have it be a matter of intellectual curiosity, rather than an endless rabbit-trail of minor frustrations... sorry you are also being affected by it,

Thank you! I think you described it well.  What amazes me is that nobody found a solution to something that must be a relatively easy fix.  Just wondering if they solved that in CC.

Interestingly enough, I discovered that the Shift+F5 works on my desktop, but not on the newly installed laptop. There must be a conflict somewhere. Although there should not be anything to 'contaminate' a laptop with only PhotoShop and Adobe DNG Converter installed.
