Copy and pasting flattens edges

When I'm copy/pasting an item to a new canvas, photoshop seems to be trimming one edge, and moving it to the other.  In the below picture, notice how the left side of the screws are flat, and the right side has a little protrusion.  Will someone please let me know what I'm doing wrong, or if this is a techinical issue?

How are you copying the images to begin with? Are you selecting the content or just selecting and copying the layer?

I selected the individual screws and made them their own layer.  I used them for another project, and then I selected them as a layer to copy and paste them to the attached photo.

Try dragging the layer between documents (grab the layer from the layers panel, drag up to the tab to switch to the new document and drag into the canvas) does the side still get clipped?
