CS5 Photoshop - Adobe Save for Web & Devices Error

Hi folks,

I know similar threads exists, but this one is different. For some reason, out of the blue, I can't use 'Save for Web' anymore. When I choose 'save for web', it opens the preview dialog nicely, up until I save & get this error:

"Adobe Save for Web & Devices Error

Could not complete this operation. An unknown operating system error has occurred."

save4weberror.png

Cleared all my settings, and the error remains.

I uninstalled PS CS5, installed it again... still get this error.

Hope someone knows how to fix it!

Tx!

MacBookPro3,1, running all the latest updates (OSX 10.6.4), CS5 Master Collection.

Luckily still have CS4 Master Collection installed (and Flash CS3).

(I've just got to get this off my chest, CS5 has so much issues that I stopped using it, I'm not getting paid for playing crashtestdummie. Please don't rush any future CS collections and try fixing bugs instead. )

It's fixed!

I've deleted this file:

/Users/ ~username~ /Library/Preferences/Adobe/Plugins/Adobe Save for Web CS5/Photoshop/Adobe Save for Web CS5 Prefs

(apparently yet another settings file?)

I had to do it manually and all is good now.

Tx Jeff for your help, this thread can be closed.

Do you have the 12.0.1 update installed?

Update is installed.

I removed PS with the Adobe installer app.

Did a reinstall, it didn't fix the problem.

Updated it again to 12.0.1 (went suspiciously quick), still didn't resolve the problem.

I'm not sure at what point it did go wrong... if I recall correctly, 12.0.1 already was installed.

At some point, 'save for web' just stopped working, don't know why.

Not using plugins or did anything out of the ordinary.

Did you try resetting Photoshop's Prefs on startup?

You can also trash Save For Web's prefs by quitting Photoshop, deleting the following file, and restarting Photoshop:

Volumes\username\Library\Preferences\Adobe Save for Web 11.0 Prefs

Tried 'Command+Option+Shift' on startup and trashing the preferences...

Deleted: Volumes\username\Library\Preferences\Adobe Save for Web 12.0 Prefs

And tried your suggestion deleting: Volumes\username\Library\Preferences\Adobe Save for Web 11.0 Prefs

Nothing helps

I'll send you a direct message. We should probably do a connect session to see if I can debug what's going on.

Oh a Macbook Pro and perhaps saving to an external drive? If so perhaps a faulty cable?

I suspect if you are involved in professional services you have to have an external drive? CS 4 might not see it the problem.

But with both of my suggestions I have no real knowledge of your system so I am guessing.

It also occurred to me you might have conflicting software installed if it occurs with CS 5 and not CS 4 as you indicated.

Also what  about your scratch disk? Is it external?

Hi Wade,

Tx, but 99% of my time, I work on my local system (scratch disk also). Already had problems working with the company's network (files get locked or corrupted while trying to save), so we've learned the hard way not to use the network.

I guess that's somewhat expected if you work with a Mac, in a professional Windows environment.

Meanwhile, I'm a step closer in finding a solution myself. A colleague gave me a great tip, if you create an extra user account on the system, you start with a clean library. On my second account, PS CS5 is working just fine. So clearly, something went wrong in my library. Maybe permissions like you've said. At this point, I could try to fix it by copying files from the one user to the other. But I would like to wait for that connect session so they can see what's wrong.

I had the exact same problem on Windows Photoshop CS4 - and found the solution.

Like the other commentors here, when I tried to overwrite an existing image using Save for Web and Devices, I received an "Adobe Save for Web & Devices Error" and wasn't allowed to save the file. The solution for me was to delete the following files:  "Default Settings.iros" and "Recently Used Optimizations.irs" (the only two files present) in the following directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\[user profile name]\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings\en_US\Save for Web Settings\

Note that there were other sub-directories of the "Save for Web Settings" folder - I didn't touch any of those.
