Well, CS5 is not treating me well, so far. When I go to to Workspaces/New in CS5 and when I quit , I get a message like this:

"Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders."

And then it crashes.

HERE'S THE FIX:

Navigate to /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings

Select that file File>Get Info

At the very bottom under permissions, hit the + icon.

Add your user name from the list that pops up.

Highlight the user just added.

Click the gear icon to the right of the +/-

Choose make owner.

Click the gear icon again and choose apply to folder contents.

Open Photoshop.

That should do the trick!

Yeah, I think the installer is the culprit.

If I go into the ~/Library/Preferences folder and create a new subfolder, it get assigned the correct privileges with me as the owner every time. It's only the CS5 folders created by the Adobe Installer that have a different owner.

  Hello Jeffrey-

Is there any way to know when the installer bugs will be fixed? I have a new iMac coming that I wanted to install Ps CS5 on but I don't want to deal with these problems. I'm not going to buy it untill I hear something has been done, I don't want to bring it into an Apple service center to have the CS5 installed correctly. Is there a time guestimate, how will I know if a patch is availble to whatever I get sent as CS5.

I'm anticipating lots of problems moving into a new computer and just don't want this on top of the rest.....

TIA

Trust me, whether you are moving from a PC to your new iMac or from another Mac, you will not have problems. I've done both of these, and it's always been easy. Just install CS5, because not everyone has this problem. It is only a select few, and from asking people I know it seems only people who downloaded on or very close to the initial launch are affected. You should be fine- and if not we are here to help. It's simple to fix, luckily. I wouldn't wait on this one, I'd just go for it. Like I said, transition from anything to a new Mac (especially snow leopard) is SO easy. It'll be better than you expect, trust me.

  Thanks for your reply Automaticshutter-

I figure I could get it up & running by following any or all the fixes mentioned in this thread, but if you spent that much time, boy, a long few nights before I would get it running correctly. It bothers me that two Adobe employees who apparently were interested in seeing this installer issue through just withdraw from the thread with no hint that anything will be done about it.

Any news is good news to me. Your statement that this is not a common issue is good to hear. As far as you know, the install problems have occured in the most early releases, well, it's still really early I think.

I don't know how these bugs are fixed but I know my luck, I'll be sent an early release CD that just got issued, to me. I'm sure your probably correct, and for all I know, the issue has been addressed, but officially I guess no one will ever hear back about it. I'm thinking to wait 1 month, hopefully all the shelves have been cleared & restocked with fresh inventory.

I appreciate your reply and feel secure enough to go forward but will hold myself back a couple weeks at least, just to be safe....

I was having this problem with Photoshop and the whole CS5 suite.

I have a separate hard disk for my boot disk and my user disk.  ( Popular with people who have their boot disk on a flash drive and their user disk on a standard hard disk. )

The installer doesn't like this. It installs but all the programs are pretty much unusable. Major permission problems. and all the programs would crash on exit even when I tried to fix the permissions.

How I fixed it:

I created a administrator account on the boot disk and installed from this account. Now everything works perfectly.

If you have a separate user disk and are having problems. Try my solution.

Worked for me.

BTW your response was not helpful and glosses over serious underlying problems that should not be present in a software package that cost this much.

More like Toyata telling you that the "Your tire pressure is low. To fix this please fill your tires to the pressure specified on the outside of your tire" light told you all you needed.

The Adobe message says:

"Could not apply the workspace because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders."

By your analogy, if an Adobe tire pressure icon lights up on my dash, my Adobe car may be referring to a tire on my car, but it doesn't tell me which tire, or it might be referring to a tire on my wife's car, which might be located in the same garage. It could also be simply that my trunk is locked and I don't have the right key to check the air in the spare.

How is the user expected to know what file the app is talking about? Is it a workspace file? How about a preferences file? What's the name of the file? Where do I find it? Application Support? User preferences folder? System preferences folder? A little clicky button that takes me to the file would be nice. Better yet, give us software that lets us just drag a folder from your Installer CD to our Applications Folder like most of the other apps we use. Even Microsoft Office works that way.

I wish it was as simple as the low tire pressure icon on my dash. We all understand that one.

I have the same problems workspaces are not accessible and to my dismay there is nothing in my 'Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings' folder, located at: Username /Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings.  I am using a Mac Pro and I have installed the etended version upgrade from the disc. I also tried the installation of the trial version and then in putting the serial number to activate it as the purchased version. However when I checked I still had the same problems:

     1. cant change preferences

     2. cant change work spaces

     3. no content in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings folder.

     4. PS5 quits unexpectedly

     5. HD4870 graphis card Open GL capabilities not recognised by CS5 (still recognised by CS4 though)

I just cannot get CS5 to work

It sounds like you have knowledge that this issue is no longer happening to people who are now downloading the installer. Has there been an updated installer since launch?

In answer to your question, I don't believe so. See Chris Cox reply to my earlier post (a couple above this one).

I am having the same problem too as detailed here:

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/628617?tstart=0

Even after changing the permissions of all the folders and files, the CS Live button on the CS5 apps did nothing when I clicked it (although the other problems went away). I was only able to fix this by installing CS5 on another user then manually copying over all the application support folders to my main account with the problem.

*EDIT*

I have checked through my hard drive and is seems that EVERYTHING related to CS5 has its permissions set to 'system'. This includes all the apps, their folders and other files, everything.

And worse, altering them only works temporarily for some. I have seen the permissions on the preferences files reset to system even after I have changed them.

I'm glad I read this post. Maybe you could get back to the thread with an update when the installer is fixed. I'm not going to order till I hear, this will happen to me for sure.

Thanks, Bob-

I can confirm that on both my machines "EVERYTHING related to CS5 has its permissions set to 'system'. This includes all the apps, their folders and other files, everything."

I'd sure like to know how permissions should be set and if these settings are wrong I sure hope Adobe figures out how to fix this. Quite frankly this is more than a bit disappointing (to put it politely and mildly).

I should add that I have very vanilla flavored machines. I'm no power user, I don't screw around moving files around, and I haven't even loaded any beta apps. I'm running 10.6.3 with NO Time Machine anything and I have no OS X permissions issues.

The ownership should match the user that installed the software.

To summarize here are the items that I changed permissions on. I made myself the owner and applied changes to all enclosed items. Then I deleted system permissions. I made no changes to the root level library items. I don't know if I've missed anything but so far everything seems to be working fine.

Application Folder:

Adobe Bridge CS5 (folder)

Adobe Device Central CS5 (folder)

Adobe Extension Manager CS5 (folder)

Adobe Media Player (folder)

Adobe Photoshop CS5 (folder)

User/Library/Preferences folder:

Adobe (folder)(not sure but this may have been correct)

Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings (folder)

Adobe Save for Web 12.0 Prefs

User/Library/Application Support Folder:

Adobe (folder)

User/Library/Caches Folder:

Everything was correct.

After I changed the access privileges the problem with the workspaces went away.

I would have expected Adobe to have posted a new installer by now.
