Well, CS5 is not treating me well, so far. When I go to to Workspaces/New in CS5 and when I quit , I get a message like this:

"Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders."

And then it crashes.

HERE'S THE FIX:

Navigate to /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings

Select that file File>Get Info

At the very bottom under permissions, hit the + icon.

Add your user name from the list that pops up.

Highlight the user just added.

Click the gear icon to the right of the +/-

Choose make owner.

Click the gear icon again and choose apply to folder contents.

Open Photoshop.

That should do the trick!

Probably just a mad rush to get CS5 shipped by the end of the month. We'll all take a deep breath and Adobe will get it fixed. If we had a chance to be part of the solution, I'm glad.

Thanks to the advice posted here I can get Photoshop CS5 to launch and save my settings. Thankfully it's also detecting my graphics card and allowing OpenGL acceleration now. However, it still won't quit properly.

Tried other CS5 applications. Illustrator works but crashes on quit. Dreamweaver and InDesign won't launch at all.

I had the same issues discussed here after install on one of my Macs ("locked" issue first, then crashing on quit after I manually set ownership and permissions).

My solution was to boot into safe mode, uninstall Photoshop CS5, repair permissions, create a new Admin account, log into it and install Photoshop CS5. After that, all worked properly (deleted new user profile and now running from my normal profile). So, obviously some issues with my user profile...

Good luck!

I was having the EXACT problem listed multiple times here.

Unfortunately, I spent ~8 hours fixing it on my own.

Here's my solution (it's very similar, in the beginning).

I uninstalled (manually) Adobe's installer/uninstaller program and reinstalled it. Then I went and found all of the Preferences information and erased it from my hard drive. I then went in to textedit and recreated all of the files, saved as ".txt" -  then reverted to ".psp" - and finally, I opened up permissions, made myself owner (of EVERYTHING CS5 related), and DELETED system as even having access to the files.

That's as of this morning, and 10:30 at night it's the same deal. Everything is working fine, and Photoshop even quits without having to force quit. I think the force quit problem can be solved by recreating all of the files (time consuming, but worth it).

I've found more permissions oddities - in the Utilities folder. The "Adobe Utilities - CS5" folder and all enclosed items have System as owner and it's in there twice.....for each and every item I looked at in this folder.

One of the easiest ways to change the permissions on all these things without having to worry about it missing some files deep within the directory structure is to simply duplicate the main offending app or preferences folder, then delete the original. When the duplicate is created, it automatically sets full permission for your user and removes 'system'.

In the case of my "Adobe Utilities - CS5" folder duplicating assigned me permissions for all items but it did not remove system permissions from all items. This might be because system shows up twice (I don't know) but in any event it hasn't seemed to caused any issues (and I am therefore not inclined to burrow thru each folder removing system permissions).

peab0 - What a great tip! I had tried to change permissions with 'Get Info' and despite changing all Preferences & Application Support and applying to enclosed items I still couldn't get FW to launch. But I followed your tip and duplicated the folders, trashed the originals, renamed to drop 'copy' and VoilA!!! it works! thanks

I'm getting the same error message as everyone else.  The solution in post 17 (User>library>preferences>abobe photoshop CS 5 settings) doesn't help because that last folder is empty and the "get info" pane is therefor grayed out.  I am a computer menance and have no intention of delving into my MacBookPro's innards.  I'm running Leopard and have had no trouble with anything else, including CS 3.  Just upgraded to CS 5 from the disk last week.

Now what?

The folder is empty so ignore that fact and click the folder, choose get info and at the bottom of the window click the little padlock. put your administrator  password in th dialogue box that opens (asking your permission to make changes) then the info box stuff will not be grayed out.

I was also pulling my hair out trying to sort this problem about a fortnight ago.

hope this helps Denis

Thank you. Hadn't realized that the lock icon was unlockable even

when the window was grayed out. Could then add my name to the list of

users. Why it didn't install under my user name makes no sense, but

none of my computer woes ever make any sense. That seems to have done

it.

It most certainly has done it.  iTunes will neither open nor force quit, Word won't open and Disk Utility got stuck in my iTunes hard drive (external) and also would  not force quit.  I'm tired of rebooting, so do not know what else is screwed up.  Firefox and Lightroom do seem to be working.  The Application folder in my home account seems to be empty, although I can access its contents from the dock or the Finder window.  WTF is going on??

Hi Amy sorry your having so much Trouble. I would advise you to reinstall PS CS5 and do the permissions as described then leave things be, don't use Disc Utiliy.  I did that and it caused me probs with CS5 again Wait a while til the bugs are fixed in PS5 then perhaps fix permissions). Cant comment on other programs being affected, but I also have three external drive, 1 for TM, i for super duper backup and 1 for saving my original photos to direct from the camera/card these are working fine.

That is bad advice.  Apple's Disk Utility is essential to maintaining your system in top shape.

I'm just pointing out that when I repaired them after correcting this particular problem CS5 stopped functioning again. I am not suggesting she should never repair permission again. Maybe the problem Amyis experiencing is Apple related, I am just asking her to try leaving repairing permissions an seeing if her other programmes work ok! I agree that under normal conditions you would fix permissions bu every time I have done this since installing PS CS5 I have experience problems with it such as Programme quitting without warning. or Having to force quit PS CS5 or the programme running very slowly.

Actually, I was running Disc Utilities on my iTunes drive when both

froze on me. So, if I repair my permissions in the future, I can

expect problems with CS 5? Lovely. How did you undo the damage?

As for fix #17, my bad. I missed the last step. iTunes etc. now

behaving, although my Application folder in my home account is still

empty.

Most of the problems I am having on this blasted machine are Adobe

related (white balance changes, mainly).

Thanks,

Amy

As I stated in the other post to you, I had to remove PS CS5, then reinstall it, fix the get info bit and then everything was up and running again.   As to your Application folder being empty (really odd behaviour) all I can suggest if you havn't already done it, is to restart your mac with all external drives disconnected and see if things re-appear in the Apps folder.  Incidently I checked the permissions on the folder located at /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CS5ServiceManager and found the read write access was wrong on this file to so I changed it and everything worked better After doing this I repaired permissions using disc utility and this time everything seems fine.  I can honestly say I have never experienced such unpredictability after installing software in the twenty years I have been into computing. I would smash the thing if I didn't need it so much!

Good luck, if I find anything that will help I will post it. Denis

Denis,

Have already restarted - folder is still empty. I know what you mean

about computer murder - I've only been using one since I switched to

digital cameras 6 years ago and I am able to make the Apple store folk

cringe by simply walking in the door with yet another "we've never

seen it do THAT before" problem. Still running Leopard, as the geek

feels that my system is unstable enough as it is without messing with

the OS.

Hi Amy.

Sorry just come in. It might not have crossed his mind that the fact it is unstable may well be due to the O/S If you have a spare external drive of the same capacity as your System drive you could remove PS CS5 then copy your system to the spare drive using Super-Duper,  You could then try a clean (new) install of your O/S  (or the latest Snow Leopard if you have an Intel Mac),  and if everything is stable you could install  PS CS5 again, make the changes to the 'Get Info' Read/Write permissions and see if that works OK. I know that might mean you have to install any other software that you currently have but you will then know for certain your system is stable.  I had to do this a while back as I was experiencing odd problems that seemed unrelated to what I was doing and it did solve my problems. I think I want to find something every one would like then half produce it, sell it to millions of people and leave them  and my staff (in their own time) solve all the problems generated by it while I tour the world on the proceeds. These companies are having a laugh aren't they!

Denis,

Too much work! When I finally shoot this machine, I will reinstall

everything from the disks on a new desktop and see what happens. The

problems I've had go back to my PowerBook and continued thru an

upgrade to Leopard on this machine. Things have been more or less

stable for a year, so am not inclined to wake up the pissed off little

men who are running my machine. Better they should stay asleep.
