Well, CS5 is not treating me well, so far. When I go to to Workspaces/New in CS5 and when I quit , I get a message like this:
"Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders."
And then it crashes.
Wassup?

HERE'S THE FIX:
Navigate to /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings
Select that file File>Get Info
At the very bottom under permissions, hit the + icon.
Add your user name from the list that pops up.
Highlight the user just added.
Click the gear icon to the right of the +/-
Choose make owner.
Click the gear icon again and choose apply to folder contents.
Open Photoshop.
That should do the trick!

Thanks for the link to the adobe CS5Utility Jeffrey, that seems to have resolved the problem of having to force quit PS CS5 Extended. I had set the read/write permissions for the CS5ServiceManager Folder earlier to unlock CS5 so hopefully I am now home free. Thanks again.

Amy. Snow Leopard 10.6.4 Combo update is now available on Apple website /Downloads, that might help as Apple have been collecting data on problems with PS CS5 ever since the release. I am just downloading it now although it's going to take + 4 hours as my connection aint that fast at this time of day. I will let you know if there is any improvement after the updat is installed.

The error message tells you what the problem is, and how to solve it.
So what is your question?

Chris, I went to the folder Users/DLoera/Library/Preferences/Adobe photoshop cs5 settings. that i had went to earlier and assigned myself the owner, BUT this time I left it unlocked? and it worked; I can now access all the different workspaces;0) that Error message really wasn't very helpful though.
Do I have to do this to the entire master collection?
I appreciate your help, Thanks!

Dloera,
Start up the "Console" Program in the Utilities Folder. It shows error logs and usually provides adequate information to trace a problem.

So what is your question?
That's an error message only a programmer could love. I wouldn't agree that it does anything except confuse the user. It doesn't tell the user where to find the file with the problem, the name of the file, or how to fix the problem. You guys can do better than this.

Can't thank you enough, Rob Rockaway, for solving this issue for me. I just installed CS5 upgrade last week and this issue was driving me nuts. Tried everything I could think of from trashing the prefs to repairing the permissions on my harddrive. Nothing worked 'til I came across your solution of fixing the permissions on the Settings Folder.

Wow, here we go again. How can Adobe create an installer that doesn't get tested to repair or create the correct permissions for the only user of the computer? How does this get past quality control? Is this just because it's a Mac? This was not the case with CS4 so why is it here for the 'next generation?' Bad implementation Adobe.
Fix permissions on preferences in the User library to repair this for Photoshop. Similar issues with other applications in CS5. Take care...

I recently received DVDs as well as the digital download for CS5 Standard Edition and both of them write all the files with all the wrong permissions. I'm not going to go through and manually fix all the permissions when I do 18 installations company-wide. When will there be a proper installer?
Thanks.

It really should work right out of the box . . .but Adobe's fix may be awhile coming and Rob Rockaway's fix was quick and easy. Might give it a try when you tire of waiting . . .

I had the same problem, after reading a few dozen solutions I tried another angle. I realized I had changed my extensions. At first no problem, restarted and worked with the program all day yesterday. This morning would not open. Went into extension manager, removed the new extension and all is well. May not be everone's solution, but worked for me.
